On either side of Saint Peter's Square are two fountains. They have an interesting history (will fill in later), but on both sides, between the fountain and the centre of the square, are small circles on the pavement. If you stand on these circles, the 4 rows of pillars surrounding the square appear to be a single row, making for an interesting optical illusion. These are well known points, and while I was there, a school group was taking up both of them... when I came back, the area was roped off for seating arrangements for Sunday Mass the next day, so I couldn't get a picture.

On the right side of this picture you can see the Castle Sant'Angelo, which was intended to be the burial place for the emperor Hadrian. The bridge in front of it, the ancient Pons Aelius, linked the mausoleum with the center of Rome. It was later turned into a fortress, it became a prison in which famous characters were incarcerated . Right now, it is a museum in which it contains various exhibits relating to the construction and history.

Apostolic Academy - Gianicolo

by icunme

Walking up the back way from the Vatican to Gianicolo hill, we passed this facility on the left side. The winding road up to the top of the Gianicolo was a lovely excursion in itself.
