Take a bag with you for the souvenirs. If you are into Catholic imaginery, this is a great place. Well, you can have this stuff for lower prices in many other cities, but this is the Vatican after all. If you are into stamp collecting, you should know that the Vatican has its own postal service. I think that they actually use the services of the Swiss post, but they print their own stamps. Besides, although the Euro is the official currency, the Vatican mints its own Euro coins with the image of John Paul II.

Vatican City requires proper attire for people going into its buildings and the Vatican Gardens. For men, make sure that you have long pants and - though this is not quite as important - collared shirts. Ladies can wear pants or skirts of appropriate length, but make sure that you bring something to cover your shoulders. Also, you should bring comfortable walking shoes for the climb up St. Peter's and through the almost endless Vatican Museum. Of course, if you are lucky enough to get into a Papal audience, coat and tie for the men and a dress for the ladies - preferrably black in color - are mandatory. The interiors of some of the Vatican buildings are darkened to protect the artwork. Bringing a higher speed film for indoor shots is probably a good idea.

These are the Swiss Army Guards......they guard the Pope. There are other guards at the front entrance who will not let you in if you are not dressed in slacks....no shorts allowed.

Let's spend some time now and talk about this all-important question: What's the DRESS CODE like here? When you visit the basilicas and many of the other churches here in Italy (yes, the Vatican included), DO bear in mind that the following are NOT allowed - NO bare shoulders. NO short shorts (yeah, the type that you see Pamela Anderson wearing). :-)) NO bare midriffs a la Madonna Ciccone... Not even if YOU are Madonna herself. :-)) Bermudas and culottes are sometimes grounds for problems in the Vatican Museum and most often in St. Peter's. Tanktops, skimpy athletic tops and other excessive displays of flesh are problematic at best. Hey, what do you think?? This is a religious place, ya know?? Whatever you may feel comfortable in, you may find yourself uncomfortably bounced if you violate these common sense rules!!! O.K., the GOOD NEWS here is that it's no longer required of...

When in the Vatican, make sure you dress conservitively (*SP*) Girls must cover their shoulders. Also their legs i think. This is a picture of the tombs of popes below the cathedral.
