Stamps from the Vatican are different from the Italian ones! They might make a nice souvenir! Watch out: some of the places make you buy 61c stamps (for a letter), even if you only want to send postcards - 41c)!
Wherever we went, we saw the sign:"NO VATICAN EURO COINS AVAILABLE"There are only a very few coins, none of them have ever been used as a real currency - just for collectors and for a real high price!!I don't know, if they will reprint those coins or if these signs will be there for good!
If you go to the top of St. Peter's you will probably see this little trinket shop as you go down. It is filled with little stuff, tapes, books, and pictures/postcards. Reasonable prices, but I didn't find anything I liked.
The "Church-state" - Kirchenstaat - was much bigger than today's Vatican.And it also had it's own stamps since around 1874....This letter is from 1894 and it is a letter consisting of a double-pagen with the long message in it - and it was finally folded in a way, that the message was not revealed from outside and the stamp and adress for delivery is seen on this scanning - and there was a seal at the back...
much more interesting than the plain stamp will certainly be to get official letters from the Vatican-state-offices to one of their Cardinals.......like this letter for Cardinal Innizer ( he was Cardinal of Vienna during WW2 and beyond) of 1953 - it was a registered letter, sent by airmail and has the emblem of the pope on the backside of the letter
If you want an unusual souvenir to send someone, send them a postcard from the Vatican. This small state has its own postage system with its own stamps. Vatican City stamps - for a special souvenir postcard.
Not available at Vatican Musem Gift Shop but it should be.
Often you will find that souveniers of Rome are cheaper in the Vatican than in Rome
