We arrived the day before the Festival of St Peter, so everything was prepared for the Popes speech the next day, and all the decorations were up.
Lonely Planet- "Bernini's Piazza San Pietro (St Peters Square) is rightly considered a masterpiece. Laid out in the 17th century, the immense piazza is bound my 2 semicircular colonnades, each of which is made up of 4 rows of Doric columns. In the centre of the piazza is an obelisk that was brought to Rome by Caligula from Heliopolis (in ancient Egypt).
