View of the Illusion

by sandysmith

Don't worry if you can't find the spots - chances are someone will be standing on them - its a well known illusion that the tour guides mention so its always a popular photo opportunity! Here's a view of the illusion - the second row of columns has magically disappeared!

Different angles

by sandysmith

At the top of St Peter's dome you can take the usual views of the landscape around of the city and the vatican gardens and museum but I'm always on the lookout for a different kind of view so this sideways view appealed to me.

The underground

When visiting the main chapel at the Vatican, take the tour of the catacombs and see all of the popes that are burried there. There are some beautiful bits of art under here that should just not be missed.

The Cupola Climb

by sandysmith

The dome or cupola can be climbed for some wonderful aerial views over the Vatican, the square below and over Rome. You can climb all the 330 steps for a cost of 4 Euros or take a lift part way for 5 Euros. I'd recommend the lift as there's still a fair amount of steps to climb, so save your breath for the view! Its not for the claustrophobic either, the stairs wind very tightly, are narrow in places and have a real lean, you can hardly walk straight!

Inside St Peter's

by sandysmith

The inside of the St Peter's basillica is just awesome, the amazing works of art and the marble floor - look carefully for the sizes of other famous churches around the world marked out on the floor. I noticed that the Liverpool Anglican cathedral (not far from my home) is the largest one in Britain.

Largest Church in the World

by sandysmith

Christianity's greatest temple, stood over the tomb of St. Peter, the founder of the Church of Rome, and was opened in the year 326. During the Renaissance, however, it was torn down to build a magnificent new basilica, with the work entrusted first to Bramante, and subsequently to Raphael, B. Peruzzi, Antonio da Sangallo and, lastly, Michelangelo, who designed the dome as the dominating element of the church. On Sundays at noon, provided the Pope is resident, he addresses the faithful from a floor high in the Vatican Palace. The window is marked by a tapestry emblazoned with the papal arms. Papal audiences occur on Wednesdays. If you want to be present you should write in advanceto the Prefettura della Casa Pontifica, 00120 City of Vatican. If you are already in Rome you can call into the Prefettura (Mon Fri 9-1pm) through the bronze doors under the colonade to the right

Doors of St Peter's

by sandysmith

As you exit from the dome stairway and leave the church take take to admire the bronzes on the huge doors of the church - you could almost miss these amonst all the many other treasures, which would be a shame, so much detail in them. There are 5 doors thatopen; the one that stands on the right side is the Holy Door. This door is officially opened by the Pope according to a special rite, exactly on Chritmas Day.

Bernini's Baldacchino

by sandysmith

This baroque altar canopy art masterpiece stands 29m high in the centre of the church. The bronze used was taken from the roof of the Pantheon. Only the Pope can serve at this high altar, which stands over the site of St Peter's grave.

St Peter's Dome

by sandysmith

Look up above you in the church and see the dome, so large at 138 feet in diameter and some 119m above the altar. It looked so beautiful with the sunlight streaming through it - and even more amazing being up in the dome looking down.

Gallery of the Maps

by pili

Take note of the frescoed ceilings by Cesare Nebbia and others under the direction of Girolamo Musiano.-There are benches to sit down while you gaze up at the ceiling in amazement.-The 40 separate panels of maps were painted directly onto the walls, by Father Ignazio Danti of Perugia between 1580 and 1583.-
