Follow the Vatican dress code

by Escadora7

Vests and shorts are not considered appropriate attire for entering the Vatican since there is a strict dress code which dates back 400 years. Sometime back there was a story headlined 'At St. Peter's you may bare your soul, but not much skin.' The Holy See has guards at St. Peter nicknamed 'Gods Bouncers' to firmly explain these rules to you. Women must cover their shoulders, legs and arms, while men are required to wear long trousers. So make sure you carry a t-shirt or a pair of trousers that you can slip into before entering the vatican. Thankfully, Eva and I were dressed appropriately without even realizing it, so we did not face any incident. Some Interesting tales - One man had to take off his sports shirt and lay under a tree outside, bare chested, while his wife covered her strapless sun dress with his shirt. One tourist even exclaimed, 'I am born naked and the church wants me...

Taking picture

by Glorija

Inside the Vatican museums you must not use your flash while taking pictures. Othervise guard inside each room will be not satisfied ... Well this is logical since the colours on every picture is very sensitive!

Not many drive-by shootings here

by sourbugger

Believe it or not, the Vatican city has the highest crime rate in the world. I'm not making some political point about Catholicism here, or accusing nuns of having a less than savoury alter (or altar)-life.It has more to do with the fact that the state has some 500 permanent residents 18 million annual pilgrims and tourists. Hence we can calculate the world's highest per capita crime rate -106 % Many of those who do get caught don't face charges because of the bureaucratic complications regarding foreign citizens. No wonder they need so many confession booths inside the Basillica.Hence the advice : watch out for pickpockets, who will make up the majority of these statistics.

Fighting for the money

by sourbugger

The last time that sets of Vatican City Euro coins went on sale, the queues were long. Being Italy, the queues were not exactly orderly, and much of it ended in unseemly brawling. The reason was simple. A set of German / French / Spanish / Italian etc. Euro coins can be bought for around 15 dollars, but a full set (from a trader) of Vatican coins can set you back nearly 100 times that.Like the other tiny countries of Europe, the Vatican mint can only issue coins in direct relation to its population. They are legal tender, so do be careful to check your change - you never know your luck, and you would kick yourself if you missed out !The only set of Euro coins rarer than a set from the Vatican City would be a British set.

No Smoking, thank you very much

by sourbugger

The republic of Ireland is usually credited with being the first country in the world to ban smoking in all public buildings (including all pubs, bars shops and restaurants). It was in fact the Vatican City that beat them to it by a couple of years. The tiny Vatican police force are at liberty to slap on a 30 Euro fine if you light-up. Even if the signs to that effect are all in Latin, lack of a classical education will not be taken as an excuse.

Vatican museums visiting hours

by mirko_p

Before you plan to visit the vatican museums remember that:Opening hours:Monday-Friday: 8.45 - 15Saturday: 8.45 - 12.30Sunday: closedNobody expect the museum closes at 12:30 on Saturday, for this reason people stay in lane even after the museum closed. We waited more than 1 hour to figure out the museum was just closed.

Security check

by tini58de

Before being allowed to enter both the Basilica as well as the Museum, you will have to go through a security check!Make sure not to carry knives with you - otherwise you will have to leave them there for the time of your visit.....

waiting in line........

by tini58de

When visiting the Vatican Museum, get ready to stand in line for quite awhile!!! Especially if you want to see it in the morning! We went there around 10 o'clock on a Tuesday and waited for something like 40 minutes, which we thought, was not too bad! The line on Monday was much longer....When we got out around 12.30 h - there was no line at all (but the museum closes rather early, so if you go late, you might have to rush a little...)
