Now, since the 11.09.01 the security has increased drasticly.Everybody gets checked by metaldetectors, and all luggage goes through a scanner (photofilm-safe).So leave knives and other dangerous items at home!

About the only warning I can think of is that there are TONS of vendors selling souveniers. Most of them are not bad, but some of them are not only selling touristy things that you have no idea why you bought 3 weeks later, but are selling very poor quatlity merchandise, not just things in bad taste!

No dangers to speak of, but papal events can turn Vatican City into a horde of humanity. Also, the Vatican Museum goes on forever. Be prepared. If you run out of steam, there is only one way to go: Forward! Also, the Swiss Guard are watchful for littering and inappropriate attire. You will be turned away if improperly dressed. Women must cover their shoulders, and men should not wear shorts. (This restriction does not apply to St. Peter's Square.) Finally, the climb to the top of St. Peter's is not bad, but it is winding and narrow. Be reasonably fit.

Not inside of Vatican, but around the city, there are snack bars (actually, trolleys with food). Here you can buy sandwich and water, but be aware that prices are VERY HIGH because there are too many tourists. If you have a tight budget, take something to eat with you and a bottle for water (you can get drinkable water everywhere in the city).

Well...this is not a danger..but a warning. When you are going through the Vatican Museum...there are about a million signs showing the way to the Sistine Chapel. You kind of go in a maze to get there and when you do finally see the Sistine Chapel...it seems you have to leave and you can't go back to see the rest of the museum. I don't know....maybe I got confused. Another thing is the line to get inside the Vatican Museum is extremely long but I was pleasantly suprised, it moved rather quickly.

This is not a bad thing, but rather something to beware. If you visit the Vatican on the one free day every month (entry to the museum is free) this will mean that a lot of people will be there and the lines will be looong! We waited in excess of 2.5 hours to gain entry to the museum. Plan ahead if you want to be in St. Peter's square to see the Pope. We had to practically sprint through the museum to make it in time...

This is not really a warning, just a suggestion. If you need to mail something while in Rome, avoid the Roman postal system and bring your mail to the Vatican post office. Vatican City has its own postal system which tends to be much more efficient and reliable than Rome's.

Just bear in mind one important point: Whether or not this is a religious place filled with Swiss Guards descended from 16th century mercenaries, crowds are extremely fertile territory for pickpockets anywhere. Yes, the Vatican City included. Be careful of pickpockets and gypsy kids who most certainly will operate in a group. Do try and avoid looking like an easy target too. Even if you're lost, TRY and act like you know where you're going. Basically, look and act CONFIDENT and you won't go wrong.
