Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God

by jorgejuansanchez Written Sep 5, 2014

There was a wedding when I visited the Cathedral.

See the third picture. After the 1988 Spitak earthquake, the 2 minor domes fell down and they were replaced with new ones. The fallen domes are currently placed in the church yard.

    Gurdjieff House

by jorgejuansanchez Written Sep 5, 2014

This house did not exist when Gurdjieff was born, but there was another one in that same place where he lived with his parents and family when he was a child, before starting his 20 years of travels around Asia.

by jorgejuansanchez Written Sep 5, 2014

House-Museum of Mher Mkrtchyan – Known as Frunzik,
Mher Mkrtchyan is one of the most beloved Armenian actors who will hardly be forgotten. Mher Mkrtchyan as a person and as an artist is irreplaceable for Armenians and there is no Armenian who hasn’t seen at least one movie in which he was featured and who doesn’t know by heart at least one phrase he made in those movies. The actor passed away in 1993 but he continuously live for the Armenian people.

    Sergei Merkurov Musei

by jorgejuansanchez Updated Sep 4, 2014

This is a most interesting museum devoted to Sergei Merkurov, which I had visited in the morning.
Sergei Merkurov, born in Gyumri, was, apart from an extraordinary man and free thinker, an artist and sculptor of Armenian-Greek descent which specialities were the postmortem masks. He had prepared those masks and also monuments for important personages in Russia and later in Soviet Union times, such as Lev Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, Mikhail Bulgakov, Lenin, Marx, Stalin, etc.
There was a painting showing Gumri in the XIX century.
In one of the expositions there was something supernatural: an old woman face was displayed in the glass of the showcase. If you took a picture of it, never appeared her face. It was a ghost appearence. The staff working there were used to it, but at the begining they all were afraid. They said that probably it was the soul of a lady living there, whose father punished without going out of the house; she never got married and died in that house, suffering for her fate.

By your information, Sergei Merkurov was the cousin of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff.

    Old Russian fortress

by jorgejuansanchez Written Sep 4, 2014

It was round like a Spanish corrida arena. Russians soldiers have a base in Gyumry, I could visit it, but it is not in that fortress anymore.
