Vernissage: Best Place For Souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shopping at Vernissage in Yerevan - Armenia
    Shopping at Vernissage in
    Yerevan

Perhaps the BEST PLACE in the whole of Armenia to buy souvenirs from.. Vernissage is a bazaar style shopping experience on a blocked off street where ONLY ON THE WEEKENDS (SATURDAY AND SUNDAYS) people sell souvenirs and pretty much any type of Armenian Handcrafts one can think of.

PAINTINGS, CARPETS, EMBROIDERIES, WOOD AND STONE CARVINGS, METALWORK, ARMENIAN DOLLS, KHACHKARS FROM TUFF AND MANY MANY MORE ITEMS

Bargaining is accepted in Vernissage but sometimes a price a customer asks is clearly not worth the many hundreds of hours spent by the person to make the khachkar from wood or the backgammon.. Hence be fair in the price you ask to pay!!!

    Armenian sweets
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Market (shuka) on Mashtots is a place where you can buy vegetables, fuits (it was strawberry season when I was there - very delicious) and Armenian sweets. Different kind of nuts, honey, raisins and figs are often used in the sweets. I bought some tasty sweets that had been made by threading walnuts on a string than repeatedly dipping it in grape juice (it was more tastey then the ones I tried in Turkey).

Vernissage flea market: find EVERYTHING under the sun, and then some...
To say that Vernissage has everything under the sun for sale is not much of an exaggeration. Everything from vast collections of used electronic circuit board components to chemicals for laboratories to Soviet relics will have you swearing you could find the components for a nuclear bomb, but you'll probably be more interested in the large handicrafts selection, carpets and memorabilia.

Located near Republic Square, off Nalbandyan Street by the Metro, the entire first block has little of interest to tourists. The strange collection of items for sale however is irresistible for photographers, who can probably never match some of the collections of random items carefully laid out on a cloth or sheet.

The second large block, starting at Hanrapetutyan Street begins with books and flags, embroidery and carpets, and continues to sections with t-shirts, backgammon/chess boards, dolls, paintings, jewelry, ceramics, khachkars, woodcraft, Soviet memorabilia, household items and a multitude of other things. If you want to take home a souvenir or gifts, odds are you'll find something here. Even if you don't you'll probably get a kick out of the sights and sounds of the sprawling market. Keep your wallets and purses tight, this is the one place in Yerevan known to have a resident pair of pickpockets.

Carpets, ceramics, backgammon boards, a painting, military patch, khachkar, doll or a good art book.

from pennies to hundreds of dollars
