THE SOVIET UNION RESTAURANT & PUB: COOL FOR CATS

PLEASE NOTE: Often listed as U.S.S.R. Pub in guidebooks.

Do you remember those fantastic basement bars in college/university with loads of character(s), cheap beer, good times and not much else? This is the bar in Baku for you! I was in the Soviet Union when I was a student, and it was never as fun as this bar. I was welcomed with open arms by 2 attractive ladies, the cat and later the manager. Great people – great beer – great prices.

The bar has lots of old Soviet memorabilia on the walls and ceilings. They also have flags donated by visitors like me – and a VT Flag is on its way to them. Mixed in with uniforms and foreign money on the walls is a pool table and plenty of places to sit and get smashed.

The manager spoke to me about the history of the bar, what they served and about general Baku life. A great man.

I really enjoyed my evening here. It was the best night out I had in Baku.

Make sure you make the trip! Your wallet will appreciate it.

    THE BREWERY: 3 GREAT CHOICES

by DAO Updated May 5, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    LIGHT, MEDIUM OR DARK ?
    4 more images

    GET IN THERE!
Located near the Icherisheher Metro Station, this excellent bar and micro-brewery is practically on your way to anything. It is worth the visit as well for real beer drinkers. Down the stairs you will find a very ornate basement with friendly staff and a simple choice of ales produced here:

    Light, Medium and Dark.

I went for the dark, perused the pricey menu, thought about playing with the nice chess game, then settled down. For another contemplative dark beer. The quality is excellent, but you can happily buy and drink inferior mass produced beers as well. Spirits, wine, its no problem. They do serve elaborate ‘bar snacks’ and have a full food menu with a German slant. With all the great restaurants in town with often lower prices, you might want to make it drinks only.

The Brewery is a definite ‘Must Drink’ opportunity for any tourist. You will find loads of Ex-pats, events, live music and plenty to drink.

For the gents – you have the best toilet facilities in Baku. There are separate urinals (pictured) so that you rid yourself of unwanted liquids in color order. They also have some odd beer ‘freebies’ in a basket as you go out. Help yourself.

Should you require any support from Law Enforcement after too much to drink, there are loads nearby due to the Town Hall, main Metro Station and other important buildings. I told you it was well located.

    Respectful clothing.

City Lights Bar / Azza: The best view of Baku

    the view from the bar
    1 more image

If you want to have the best view of downtown Baku whether it's daytime or at night, your best bet is the top of the ISR Plaza! Previously called the City Lights Bar, it has now been renamed to Azza bar. Not only does this place have a breath-taking view, it also offers you some great sushi, a big variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and live music in the evenings. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the seats are quite comfortable. Summertime the outdoor seating is available and in winter it is the best place where to escape... if you just go there once, you'll keep going back!

Dress Code: There is no dress code for this place although most people going there are usually dressed well. In Baku people like to dress well even if there is no special occasion :)

Very comfortable bar, quiet and attentive staff. Good range of liqueurs. The Heineken is also nice and cold, plus it is beside (and part of) a good restaurant, Scalini's.

Dress Code: No requirements, seems casual.

Corner/ Crossroads/ Tequila Junction: Best Bars in Baku.....

by pcblshaff Updated Oct 6, 2007

    Corner Bar
    1 more image

These ARE the best bars in Baku.... They're where all the expats go. Corner Bar has a nice mix of people from everywhere... not just the British ones. There are always a lot of cute azeri/russian girls working there and there's live music every night at 9. David and Sasha are really good.... they're the band. The place gets really packed at about 10 on Friday and Saturday... if you don't mind close quarters, this is the place for you.

Crossroads is a newer bar with the same owners as Corner Bar... it's across the road from Corner - hence the name - Crossroads ;). It has a pool table, a disco downstairs, and live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The band that plays there now is awesome. On Friday's and Saturday's, the place turns into a sort of disco at about midnight. It's definately the place to be if you want to have a good time. The cute girls work here too.

Tequila Junction is a smaller more quiet bar that has pretty good Mexican food. They have a pool table and live music on Friday nights - the same band that plays in Crossroads. They also have a nice area outside to hang around if you want to get some fresh air. During football season, they have NFL football on Sunday's at 10:00pm.

Dress Code: Anything goes at all three of these places.... well, you need to be wearing clothes;).

    Aroma Cafe: Place to relax

by Minashka Updated Aug 9, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    one of their delicious desserts

Aroma Cafe is not necessarily for nightlife. It opens around midday and doesn't close till midnight. One of the coolest cafes in downtown Baku, Aroma Cafe is the place to be these days ;-) It's a 2-storey place, part of an old building and has big windows. The service is very good, staff speaks English and the quality of food is quite high. The best thing about this place is that there is a non-smoking section even though there are only 3 tables there. The design is awesome and there are big couches and arm-chairs and of course free Wi-Fi available.

The most stylish youth can be spotted going in and out of this place all the time, but the ambiance is so nice and relaxing that you can't be bothered with anything ;-)

    Dress Code: Anything really

    1033: 1033 - The Place to Be!

by rossbaku Updated Jul 7, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

1033 is the hottest disco to be found in whilst in Baku. It is located at the Hyatt hotel, so you are guaranteed class and style all round. They serve a massive list of drinks and the music is playing well into the early hours of the morning.

    *UPDATE*
Since the writing of this article I have not been back to Baku, and as such am unaware if 1033 is still open. Reports suggest that it is now closed and opens only for private functions only.

Dress Code: Not too dressy, not too casual. Jeans and a smart t-shirt would be acceptable.

  • Nightlife in Baku

    by kensa70 Updated Feb 27, 2007

There are actually lots of nightclubs in Baku. To just name one, would not feel right. The clubs are western styled, even thought somewhat more estern, and local music. The clubs varies in style and size. Be sure to try several!

Dress Code: Recommend you dress up. Coat and tie are maybe not required, and you would most likely get in with jeans. However, the Baku nightlife people are in generall very well dressed.

Xsite disco: Get excited in X-site

by Minashka Written Sep 24, 2005

My friend Delya & I in Xsite

X-site is a new disco club in Baku (tip written in Sept 05) and is quite successful already! The place has been recently renovated which makes it look brand new :) There have always been disco clubs in the same place run by different managers but it looks like this time X-site is gonna stay around for awhile. The music is good, DJ is fine and the atmosphere is really nice. The prices are the same as in any other discos. The place is big enough for 100-150 people. Its location, however, can be the most attracting thing about this disco. Xsite on the Boulevard, right above the Red Room restaurant.

Dress Code: No special dress code required, just make sure you don't wear tennis shoes ;-)

Jazz Club: Spice up or jazz up your evening

    jazz studio

Jazz Club is located in the heart of Baku, across the street from the Boulevard and at the end of the Fountain Square. This underground place offers you live jazz music with some of the best musicians of Azerbaijan. The food there is also really good and there is a nice bar. Live music starts after 8pm and every evening there's a different band playing. You're most likely to run into real jazz lovers who come there every night! The bill includes some small fee for the musicians but they are definitely worth 10 times more. Even if you don't like jazz, this place will make you love it :)))

Dress Code: No dress code required, just be comfortable :)

  • Capitol Night Club, Baku near centre: Girls and boys - Baku-style - straight/gay

by bakutrav Updated Jul 7, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A lively night spot and more intimate and happening and younger and cheaper than 1033. At first seems straight but it has a gay element too.

It is opposite the prom under the Azerbaijan Hotel, next to the Dom Soviet governement building. Every taxi driver knows it and you can gets taxis back at all hours . Drinks are cheap 10-12,000 Manats and entry at weekends is 25,000 including one basic drink. 15,000 early in the week.

It starts getting good at about 1 AM. Best on Fri & Sat, but even Weds-Sun OK. Starts to die about 5am. There is a large video screen, strobes, good lighting and the music is a good blend of local, Russian and western, RnB trance, Europop and techno. No rock. A bit smootchy at the end.

There are many hookers from beautul to dire and a few rent boys from country-bumpkin-in-town for the night to sophisticated operators. So....at your own risk.

If you are not interested walk off. No need to be too polite. If you sit down, around the edge. you will get waiter service and less hassle than by the bar.

Being foreign helps in some ways, but be very wary, especially if you are drunk...because they probably are not.

Best to leave without any new freinds you make and arrange to meet or later...the local police seem to leave foreigners alone but pick on the locals as they leave - for bribes. tut tut.

I've been followed twice as I walked home, so leave by taxi or walk briskly and check you are not being tailed.

Sounds dodgy?... well yes .... but an experience.

Dress Code: Casual, but no cut-off vests or shorts or even 3/4 pants.

  • 1033 Izmir Street nex to the Hyatt Hotel: They are so beautifull

by Allovertheworld Updated Jan 22, 2004

Baku is simple nice and a safe place to be.
The Hyatt hotel is a really nice place to stay.
There is the Britanian Pub located left to the reception.
There you can have a small snack and as well really good draft beer for about 6 USD like usall in an hotel bar.
If you go out of the Hotel there is an Italian Place called Scallini nice restaurant not to expensive about 30 USD for Dinner incl. wine.Try the Pasta a la Seafood.
At Saturday night it's a must to check the girls at the 1033 Izmir Street closed to the Hyatt Hotel.
Entrance free for Hyatt Guests, don't forget your room card for free entrance.
After 10 p.m. the party is going on.
There you will be surprised about the beautifull girls in the bar, but don't approach to a girl if she is with anyone else.Otherwise you can invite a girl for a drink and deal the price to go up to your room.It should be about 100 max 150 USD.As well you can deal the time with her.The most girls speak english not the best but ok.
Enjoy the time with the girl.
Normally that's the only day where you can get a girl in the 1033.In the Grand Europe Hotel is a disco as well located but i couldn't try this one.If you need p.e. on Sunday a girl climb in a taxi tell the taxidriver you will need a girl i about one hour in your room and your are willing to pay up to 70 dollars. He will arrange it for .
He normally will account, don't pay this you never will see him or a girl.
At the fountain square you will find Mc Donalds and small shops, the prices are compared to europe pretty the same.
A must , ask in your hotel if they can buy Kaviar for you don't try it by yourself the *** you up.1 tin of 113 gr. will be about 20 USD best quality.
You can import 500 gr in germany.
As well take a taxi pay him 10 dollars and let you show the beach the oil drilling islands from the roads.
Take care with the taxis, they drive terrible.
