 | Baku Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 27 | | Old City restaurant is in the Old City, actually right at the entrance from Neftchilar Ave. It's underground, so do not count on any views of the Caspian even though you'll be across the street from it. The waiters (all males) are very friendly and speak English. As for food, it won't get any better!!! The chef is among the top 60 chefs in the world and you'll be served only the best of the best Azeri dishes. The atmosphere is very relaxing. The seats are kind of low and have lots of "mutakka"s (long pillow type). There is a big TV screen where they show videos of Russian and Azeri singers. There is a bar area where you can sit while waiting for your company to arrive.
I love every meal on that menu but I always go for lula kabab with walnuts. You can get lula kabab in almost every local restaurant but only few of them serve walnut lulas. It is made entirely of walnuts and is very soft. Yummyyyyy!!! And of course gutabs are there too ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Old City, vehicle entrance from Neftchilar Ave.Directions: Very near Azneft Apteka.

Wouldn't you like to go back in time? Go to Karavansarai any time of the year! Summertime you can sit in the courtyard and imagine all the Silk Way caravans that would stop there 5-6 centuries ago... There is a small fountain in the middle of the yard and just look up to get a glimpse of the Maiden Tower! Wintertime enjoy the warmth of the ground floor and look up for the door of the cave leading all the way to the Maiden Tower :) There are also private rooms that are great when it's cold outside. Every room has its own fire-place and you sit on divans with lots of pillows (mutakkahs). It's so cool! Those rooms were actually used as lodging so many centuries ago... Of course there is live Azeri music every night and even shows with belly dancer! The price is very good and there is a huge variety of both local and continental dishes. The staff speaks English and are very friendly.
All the dishes are absolutley great, especially the Azeri national meals. Go for pilaff or try the fried sturgeon with palmgranate! Yummyyyyy :) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: The Old TownDirections: Look up the "Karavansarai" sign behind the Maiden Tower - away from the open area, towards the narrow street

It was a hot July afternoon and, after a long tiring meeting in Baku's Old City ( Icheri Sheher ), my colleague, Steve, and I were rushing towards the Maiden tower to have a relaxing lunch. Then suddenly, while crossing Boyuk Gala street, we came across this new brownish-red signboard - "The Oilman's Inn: Restaurant & Bar". We looked at each other and, without exchanging a single word, marched towards the large polished wooden door. I must admit, the instantaneous decision was more a result of our parched throats and empty stomachs than that of my ceaseless curiosity to try out new restaurants. But when we reached near the door, the curiosity certainly took over as the hand-written menu hanging outside listed a rather unusual combination of offerings -- "Balti Chicken - 29,000, Lamb Biryani - 24,000, Pork Chops - 30,000, Full English Breakfast - 30,000, Fish 'n' Chip - 30,000". I had yet to come across an expat restaurant in Baku Azerbaijan that offers such a uniqe and diversified menu. Is it a Curry House? A Pub? A Greasy Spoon? Curious, we pushed the door to enter and found ourselves in a dining hall with round tables and a bar at the end. There was a smaller hall on the right hand where, apparently, some private business lunch was being hosted. The semi formal interior and the cleanliness immediately forced me to rule out the Greasy Spoon option. We were greeted and seated in the main hall by a well-mannered and pleasant waitress who handed over the menus.
A Set Lunch was on offer- soup, curry, rice, poppadum & soft drink for just AZM 32,000. But, instead of surrendering to their temping set lunch offer, I decided to explore their A La Carte menu. The starters and main course curries looked more like those offered by traditional Curry Houses - Samosas, Pakoras, Baltis, Masalas, Kormas, Biryanis etc. But the next pages of the menu seemed to take a sudden U-turn - Fillet Steaks, Lamb & Pork Chops, Egg Bacon Chips & Beans, Mushroom Omelette and many popular pub grubs. Then there was a section of Chinese dishes. Salad and smoothies selections were also quite impressive. I ordered Italian Salad, Balti Chicken and Fruit Lassi. Steve went for Chicken Soup, Fillet Steak and Banana Shake. Service was fairly quick and courteous. Balti Chicken came with Pilau rice, Poppadum and pickles. Though, I was a bit surprised that the curry was served in a bowl, instead of the traditional Wok shaped pot as they serve back in the UK. No matter how it was served, the curry itself was probably the tastiest I ever had. Steve had the same comments about his steak and I don't argue with him when it comes to steak. Total bill came out to be just AZM 110,000. As we were getting ready to get up, I saw the manager coming towards us- with a broad smile on face and two Discount Vouchers in hand. After enquiring if we enjoyed our lunch, she gave us the vouchers and requested us to come back for dinner. She also informe that they had opened just 2 weeks ago. It seems I was not very late in discovering this new gem of Baku dining scene. This is located in an old Caravanisary beside the Maiden tower in the centre of the old town. The courtyard still has a well and around the courtyard are a series of private rooms decorated traditionally. Theres a band and I suspect dancers on occasions. Its all very picturesque (if a bit touristy). Theres also a gallery at the restaurant where you can chat up the charming artist as she tries to get you to buy a painting (very good but a little more than I'd intended to pay for dinner :-) The service and food are very good although as everything is made fresh you should allow 45-50 minutes for it to come (This is a good general rule of thumb in Azerbaijan, especially outside Baku!)
They have a great meat dish which gives you a bit of everything they prepare (various kinds of Kebabs-Don't come to Azerbaijan if you're vegetarian :) Its too much for one but for a few its really nice. PS If you are in a small place and don't want meat, they'll usually have good bread and really nice feta style cheese! Big servings of American style food here. There are plenty of Americans in Baku ( because of the oil). The prices were more American style as well and the taste, yes unfortuantely more American as well. The upside was the food was a good break from the local fayre for us, and it is in a nice location whereby you can eat your meal outside by the duck pond! Sadly- this statue of a clown becons towards Fountain Square in the heart of Baku to enter and dine on junk food instead of the delicious local and the regional cousine that is available at amazingly low prices.

The caravan saray originally was a stopover for the caravans on the silk road centuries ago. Now you can eat there outside in summer accompanied by live music. The waiter spoke english and helped me a lot to order a delicious vegetarian meal. On the Fountain Square there is an Indian Restaurant namingly Maharaja. You get authentic Indian food which is a bit expensive over there but really tasty. On Fri & Sat evenings one can pay $10 & have an unlimited buffet which includes a welcome drink, starters & a main course. Taj Mahal is another Indian Restaurant . It's comparatively cheaper & good quality food. Hotel Delhi is one more Indian Restaurant with decent food & cheaper. If you want to have a local food one must taste Shourma, Piryozhki etc ... I for got the name of the hotel but it's siutated on Nizami Street Leave a Comment Theme: IndianPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Taj Mahal: 17 Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street, 370010

Baki has a huge number of restaurants and cafes, and because of the large foreign population (oil workers et al.) almost every cuisine is available. For Azeri food (kebabs, sturgeon, salad, cheese, etc....see Natik's Azerbaijan cookery travelogue for a better description) there are several upmarket restaurants along the seafront, one of them in a strange sea-shell shaped building. Taj Mahal is a good Indian restaurant, and Anadolu is a Turkish fast-food chain worth visiting if you can't get enough of kebabs. Unfortunately, McDonalds' golden arches have arrived, in the most prominent position possible...the middle of Fountains Square. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

I had several favorite resturants. Inter Grand Turk (in fountain square) serves great food and a complete meal is from 12000-20000 manats ($3-$5). Anadolu is also great, very busy and excellent food (also in Fountain Square) a complete meal is about 15000-20000 manats. My favorite restaurant was The Oriental ( in Fountain Square) where they have a great buffet every day for $5.00. the service in all three places was great! Leave a Comment Theme: Other
