Baki has a huge number of restaurants and cafes, and because of the large foreign population (oil workers et al.) almost every cuisine is available. For Azeri food (kebabs, sturgeon, salad, cheese, etc....see Natik's Azerbaijan cookery travelogue for a better description) there are several upmarket restaurants along the seafront, one of them in a strange sea-shell shaped building. Taj Mahal is a good Indian restaurant, and Anadolu is a Turkish fast-food chain worth visiting if you can't get enough of kebabs. Unfortunately, McDonalds' golden arches have arrived, in the most prominent position possible...the middle of Fountains Square.

I had several favorite resturants. Inter Grand Turk (in fountain square) serves great food and a complete meal is from 12000-20000 manats ($3-$5). Anadolu is also great, very busy and excellent food (also in Fountain Square) a complete meal is about 15000-20000 manats. My favorite restaurant was The Oriental ( in Fountain Square) where they have a great buffet every day for $5.00.
the service in all three places was great!

The place may look like a cheap fast food, LP says turkish food......but the dishes were delicious. It seemed quite popular at lunchtime.
Favorite Dish: try the yogurt soup and the aubergine dish

Baku's name is orginated from one of two Persian phrases: Bagh-Kuh ("Mount of God") and bad kube ("city of winds").
