Maybe it was because we visited during a sandstorm, but the effect was surreal. Many areas of the fort were under construction, but it still appeared to be open to the public. There was not a single other person around so we were free to explore. There are not a lot of barriers like you would normally find in North America. This makes it easy to accidentally walk into areas that are being renovated or are under construction.

The pottery we visited was not the one we were looking for, but it actually turned out to be better. After watching the potters do their thing we were able to take a turn ourselves. The non-english shopkeeper gave us a tour of the kilns that were built into an old burial mound and led us through the production process to completion. The price of the pottery both glazed and unglazed was very reasonable.

  • One of the best ways to get a great intro to a country is to visit its national museum. A national museum usually offers a great insight into its history and people and this museum does a great job in introducing tourists to the country. The museum shows archaeological finds, history of pearl fishing and some great information about the local culture. The museum also has a wildlife hall and a craftshop. A few hours is well worth it.

Find the camel herd, usually somewhere near the tree of life and try to climb on. The camels are quite tame, even my mother was able to get on with the help of the camel herder. It makes for some interesting pictures. Bring a picnic lunch and eat under the nearby tree of life.

  • Great place to see the Arabic culture, can find anything you could possibly want. haggling, bargaining, trading, are all accepted in most places. Gold is pretty cheap. Good shopping for souvenirs and lots of other things too.

  • A must-see for history buffs, the National Museum is a treasure trove of archaeological finds and Bahraini cultural artefacts.

The collection includes, most impressively, a whole excavated tomb as well as exquisitely carved seals and Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian inscriptions that document Bahrain’s trading history. Look out additionally for the dioramas of Bahraini crafts, traditional paintings, ceramics and numerous religious documents including exquisite illuminated Korans.

  • Bahrain Fort, built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and now splendidly restored to its former glory, stands on the site of previous forts built by Hellenes in the first century BC and Arabs from the 11th century AD (who ironically used it to ward off the Portuguese).

Just sign the guest book and clamber over the ramparts.

    The Barbar Temples

  • Dating from the second and third millennia BC, the Barbar Temples enclose a sacred well dedicated to the God of spring water, Enki.

Worshippers probably used the well for ablution before praying here, as outward cleanliness was very much associated with inner purity. Excavations have revealed that the temple whose remains are visible today was actually built on top of two older temples and many parallels have been drawn with Sumerian structures of the period.
The buildings were constructed of stone and though they now consist of little more than a few rocks, they conjure a compelling, if gruesome, image of the temples in their heyday. Clearly evident are stone blocks where horses were tethered awaiting ritual sacrifice and holes in the ground for the blood to drain away.

The temples are located in the village of Barbar, off Budaiya Highway and are open to visitors all the time free of charge.

Al Khamis Mosque and Beit Al Qur’an Museum
    xiquinho

  • Islam now infuses daily life in Bahrain and two places in particular offer fascinating insights into this world religion.

The oldest mosque in Bahrain, Al Khamis, is believed by some to date back to 692AD, less than a century after Mohammed’s revelations, though more solid evidence suggests a more likely date of the 11th century. The graceful twin minarets were built in the 15th century and evoke a sense of mystery and tranquility. The mosque is no longer in use and is open to the public. It is on Sheikh Salman Road, on the outskirts of Manama.

The Beit Al Qur’an, or House of the Koran, shelters a collection of the Holy book and ancient manuscripts featuring beautiful calligraphy, an intrinsic aspect of Islamic tradition. A place of scholarship as well as an intriguing spot for tourists, the building includes a mosque, auditorium for public functions and a school as well as the library and museum.
