    Muharraq Souq and old houses

by Airpunk Written Aug 12, 2012

The streets of central Muharraq are not spectacular - no traditional stands, but no modern shopping malls either. They are just as authentic as streets in a mid-sized Arab city could be. During my stay in Bahrain, I enjoyed walking through the streets just looking what kind of shops there are and loved to be surprised by some century-old living house or a small, nice looking mosque. Some of the houses have beautiful wooden carved doors.

Khalifa al Kabeer Highway - Boulevard

by Airpunk Written Aug 12, 2012

The coastal boluevard along the Khalifa al Kabeer Highway is not as glamourous as for example the Corniche in Doha. Still, it is becoming popular with walkers, joggers and others who want to spend their free time at the coast. The stretch between the fishing port and the stadium is the most popular, though not many Bahrainis are using it. Have a look at the dhow wharfes where you can see these traditional ships being built and repaired. You will also find a couple of monuments here and can watch a wharf of old dhows at work. The view onto the sea and Arad Fort is great!

    Arad Fort (Qal'at 'Arad)

by Airpunk Written Aug 12, 2012

Bahrain still has a couple of preserved forts from the pre-colonial era, one of them being Arad Fort in Muharraq. The early history of the fort remains unknown, there are still excavations going on to find out more about the history. The fort was restored in the 1980s.

Please try to inform yourself (for example via the local tourist information) about opening times. I was told that Arad Fort was open until 6 pm which was also posted on the signs at the fort. When I arrived there at 5 pm, the fort was closed...
