In order to get an almost full view of the cathedral, I had to walk along the road for about 200m. The base of the cathedral remains hidden by the ramparts but nevertheless, it gives an accurate feeling about this building : together strength and harmony.

Advise for visitors to be : if you look at these photos, you will find that a side entrance into the ramparts was open. Instead of walking along the road, I would have been wiser to walk along the ramparts, to the side entrance. I am sure that it would have been possible to take a photo of the cathedral from there, standing outside.

The entrance into the complex passes through the basement of the bell tower. Unfortunately, photography is forbidden not only in the cathedral, but within the enclosure of the complex and there is always a monk that watch. So, sorry no photo beyond this point!

A poster tells: no cigarette, no camera, no dog, no short for men, no trousers or short skirt for women, no short sleeves! For women wearing trousers, they lend a piece of material to wear around the waist! Too bad no photos were possible!

Alaverdi Cathedral is surrounded with ramparts on all sides. These ramparts are strengthened by the strongest flying buttresses I have ever seen ! The free space between most of them would hardly accommodate another one !

Alaverdi Cathedral is in the middle of the Alazani plain, outside the village of Alaverdi. It is 20 km from Telavi. For those that have no car, marchroutchka leave every half an hour the central bus station of Telavi for Ikalto (see othe tip) and Alaverdi. Therefore, it is easy to visit both locations, one after the other.
With its ramparts, you can't miss it !

Just as we left Alaverdi Cathedral, the car was stopped to let pass a flock of sheep wit a few goats. This is not unusual in Georgia and especially in this part of the country, in Kakheti. If you drive a car, never forget that you have to share the road with other users and among them cattle.
