One of the best things about travelling around Georgia is the food. Here are my three favourite Georgian dishes. To be honest there were more! - Khachapuri is bread with traditional Georgian cheese melted in the middle while it is cooked. This will often be a meal in itself. -Mushrooms in Clay Pot Simple but the combination of the Georgian mushrooms and the butter they cook this dish in makes it absolutely amazing. Some places are much better then others. -Chicken Tabak Chicken flattened and seasoned with Paprika and alot of salt. Lots of Salt is common in Georgian foods. There are many differing Vegetarian dishes as well you can try. All of it is good. In fact I put on several kilos in a month of travelling Georgia. Very unusual indeed! Leave a Comment

Georgia is well known in the region for power cuts and it happens almost on a daily basis including the capital Tbilisi. Most nights are fine up until about 8pm or so when they lights begin to fizzle and finally go out ranging from 10 minutes to 2 to 3 hours. Some places dont even have electricity in the north so plan ahead for that by taking reliable batteries and flashlight. It is not a nice feeling walking around in a town or city in Georgia on a side road when the power cuts so be prepared to do most of your sight seeing during the afternoon. Leave a Comment

Most folks want to know if they can change money in Hopa so they can pay for their onward journey into Georgia. I wasnt sure what to do because all I had was some large US dollars and Turkish Lira. This is a gem of a tip for a person wanting to change some money. If you walk directly out of the terminal in Hopa and turn left you will hit a major road that is usually busy. Follow the road for 5 minutes and turn right near the overpass walking onto the road that goes right. Following the water (Black Sea) walk for 5 minutes with the Sea to your left and you will see a row of shops on the right side opposite the water. The shops are not important but what is important is the bank that is located there. The bank WILL change your Turkish Lira/Euros etc into whatever you want ie US small bills and they will even change your money into Georgian Lari. They claim to not have a lot of Lari but they do have enough ($15 to 20 US worth) enough to get you to your hotel and your first meal in Batumi. Leave a Comment

The easiest way to get around in Georgia is with an ATM card. There are plenty of banks including the Bank of Georgia among others and most are accessible in well lit areas. Cashing up in the capital or decent size city is a good idea as most of the smaller towns have few machines around and if there is a machine you dont want to be a potential target. The safest ATM in Tbilisi is in the lounge area of the Marriott Garden Hotel near Freedom Square. Some ATMS in Georgia dispense US dollars so no need to worry. Most exchange places are similar but poke around to find a good rate. Please note that changing Scottish pounds is more difficult than changing English pounds so go with US dollars if taking foreign currency into Georgia. Leave a Comment

Refugee Central at the Hotel Iveria-Tbilisi by Groverdean Unfortunately the Caucasus are a hotbed of conflict. As a result there are many refugees scattered throughout. A famous place in Tbilisi that used to house Abkahzian and Ossetian refugees was the Iverian Hotel. Subsequent to my visit this delapadated building has been pulled down and the refugees placed elsewhere. When visiting Georgia it is important to be aware of the ethnic divisions in the Caucasus and the tragedy it has bought to many. Leave a Comment

alternative door lock. by cachaseiro not all hotlel rooms can be locked in georgia. that is especially true if you stay in the old hotels build in the communist area. that is no big problem though. just be inventive and you will end up having a laugh about it too. Leave a Comment

Tsminda Sameba, Kazbegi by maykal Go to Kazbegi! And don't stop there, but walk to the church of Tsminda Sameba on the hill behind Kazbegi's twin village of Gergeti. More about it below! Leave a Comment

by iriko Gagra(little town), where mountains closely rose to a beach and Seaside park; cape Pitsunda with a relic pine grove, with most transparent water on all Black Sea coast of Caucasus and with tourist complex closed for non privileged tourists; lake Ritsa, clutched by mountains, and all choked up with buzzing speed-boats from which you were shown a place, where there was one of many Stalin's summer residence. And, at last, simian nursery in Sukhumi. Leave a Comment
