the "old town"
  • Tip Rating:
  • Depending on your inclination, you could spend hours or days walking around the "Old Town." I loved it: the old buildings and winding streets, and peering into the houses and courtyards for a glimpse of like of Tbilisi-ites.

There are great wrought iron (or, as my firend likes to call it, 'overwrought iron') balconies and detail work all over.

It's crumbling and full of character.

    see a religious ceremony
  • Tip Rating:
  • I'm not at all religious, but many of the people in the city and in the country are. We were lucky enough to get to the main (new) Orthodox Church in Tbilisi as they celebrated getting new icons from Mt. Athos in Greece.

Of course, this doesn't happen every day, but traveling around Georgia, one ends up in so many truly ancient churches, it's nice to see one packed with people, and on a really festive occassion.

    Tbilisi's Sulphur Baths

Tbilisi was founded on a source of hot sulphur water. The baths have been in this location for at least 1500 years and may have been here more. Tbilisi literally means "hot water".
The famous French Writer Alexandre Dumas visited the sulphur baths in 1858 and wrote about the experience. "A great sense of freedom and well-being permeated me. All my tiredness had gone and I felt strong enough to lift a mountain”.

    see the synagogue
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main synagogue in Tbilisi (actually, there are two, but one isn't so 'main') is ovely , pretty and a relatively large religious structure.

There are a few things nice about this synagogue. One is that it is on a street that also has a mosque and a church. Another thing is that it's very welcoming. You don't need a letter of invitation, or show them your passport, or prove to them that you're a Jew-in-good-standing to enter. (Sadly, this is the case in some cities.) Anyoneand everyone is welcome. And, the man that showed me around said that, in over 100 years, there was never any problems in Tbilisi with them, even during rather bleak Soviet times.

Unfortunately, I never had the chance to see a performance here, although I would have loved to. The building itself is quite impressive and is easily noticed on Rustaveli Ave.
On 12th of April, in 1851 the theatre was opened by a grandiose masquerade ball, which was attended by high society of the town. From that time on the theater had become the most important symbol of the city’s cultural life.
The website has extensive information on the Opera House, along with upcoming events.

    walk along Rustaveli
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rustaveli is the main street in the "new town" part of the city. It's wide and elegant, filled with museums, shops, cafes, and sellers of all kind. It sort of gets you everywhere, and it's a great place to get your bearings.

Regarding the Opera House, we actually found the box office, but it was dark. We would have loved to see a performance there.

    visit our 'embassy'
  • Tip Rating:
  • No. Not to eat, but to use the bathroom. Actually, you can't miss the McDonald's here, and, what a glamorous McDonald's it is. It even has Picasso prints. It's a good place to people watch, well, while you wait to use the toilet.

Actually, the thing about Tbilisi's McDonald's is that it makes a good landmark.

During this trip, McDonald's was discussed with various people in various countries. I had noted a well-known US political commentator, and huge fan of corporate globalization, Thoman Friedman, had a theory that no two countries having McDonald's had ever gone to war with each other. True? Not true? Something to think about in case political rhetoric heats up in that part of the world.

Make your way to the area where the telecommunications tower is for the best view of Tbilisi. The Holy mountain is the architectural and artistic symbol of Tbilisi, with the church of Father David, pantheon of famous writers and public figures, and a funicular on its slope. There used to be a big restaurant here. It has all but been destroyed as it was used as a strategic base for the government forces when the Civil War occured after the succession from the Soviet Union.

climb to the top of the fortress
  • Tip Rating:
  • You really can't miss the fortress. As you would expect, it's way up on a hill. While the fortress itself isn't all that unique as far as fortresses go, it does afford great views of the city. It's worth the climb, at least I think so!

The Georgian Art Museum and Treasury
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Georgian Art Museum houses a superb collection of art. This is Tbilisi’s main gallery and provides a useful introduction to Georgian painting, particularly of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Today parts of the collection are in storage for security reasons and the basement treasury is sometimes closed. However if you do find it open, the treasury is an absolute must and will blow you away at the wealth here!
Here you can find some of Georgia’s most exquisite and prized possessions both royal and ecclesiastical. You will be astounded at the amazing beauty of some of the pieces here! If you don't believe me check out the website below.
Open:Tuesday – Sunday 11.00 – 16.00 Admittance 50 tetris: for the treasury there is an additional charge of three dollars. You can get an English speaking guide (worth it!!)
