Mtskheta, once the ancient capital of Georgia. is situated at the convergence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi Rivers, not far from Tbilisi.
Mtskheta is known by its archaeological and religious monuments. Mtskheta is a World Heritage Site of the Unesco.
The cathedral of Sveti-Tskhoveli and the church of Jvari are both classical examples of their period.
Before we reached Mtsketa, we went to a viewpoint, overlooking the valley, Mtskheta, and the rivers.

The Sveti-Tskhoveli in Mtskheta is the largest functioning cathedral in Georgia. It one of the greatest architectural treasures of the country.
The first church at this place, and in Georgia, was built in the 4th century. It was 150 years later replaced by a stone church. The foundations of this church you can still see in the cathedral.
The present building is constructed in the 11th century.
For many centuries this was the place, where the Georgian kings were crowned, married and buried.
Inside the cathedral is richly decorated with wonderful frescoes.
At the Christian frescoes I discovered some flying saucers !

5 minutes walk from the train station you have a giant football stadium.
it holds 80 000 spectators, but the place is very run down.
they were busy restoring it though, when i was there.
it's still a very impressive stadium and a must see if you are a football fan.

By funicular railway we went up to the Mtatsmindis Park at the mountain top for a great, but a bit hazy view at the city.
We sat in a cabin with many local girls. Because they thought I was also from their country I got also one of the girls on my lap. We laughed a lot together, when they found out I was not from their country or even from Russia.
Half way the funicular railway is the Mama Daviti Church.

From the terrace of the Metekhi Church ( with the statue of Vahtang Gorgasali) at the north bank, you have a good view at the Nankala Fortress at the other bank of the river.
This fort has a long history. First it was a Persian Citadel in the 4th century. Much of the present walls were built in the 8th century by Arab emirs. Later Georgians, Turks and Persians captured the fort. In 1827 the fort and church were destroyed by an explosion.
You can visit the fortress, but we didn't.

The stay in Batumi was very brief, and was basically an overnight after a long travel day. Honestly, though, Batumi was the place that I experienced perhaps some of the very worst 'culture shock' of my life. I really won't go into it here. We seemed to miss the 'major' sights on the city, mainly because, well, we were tired and a bit flipped out. We did see the very nice and atmospheric port, though, along with a lot of 'street life.'

Also, it was in Batumi that we had our very first tastes of Georgian food in Georgia. For that, I'll always be grateful!

When you reach the Sveti-Tskhoveli in Mtshketa, just at the convergence of the two rivers, is the first thing you see, a huge defensive wall. It's like approaching a fortress. The wall is built in the 18th century.
The Sveti Tskhoveli is the place, where according to the legend, the robe of Christ is buried. The legend tells that a Georgian Jew, who was in Jerusalem at the time of the crucifixion, returned with the robe in Mtskheta. When his sister took the robe from hin, she died and is buried with the robe. A tree grew on the grave.
The meaning of Sveti-Tshoveli is '' life-giving column''

Near the Metekhi bridge and church at the Avlabari side (northside) of the river are many houses at the steep cliffs along the river. The houses with their balconies are hanging above the Mtkvari river.
The best view at these houses you will have from the opposite riverside.

Above Kazbegi, and the village Gergeti, at an altitude of 2170 metres, Tsaminda Sameba stands on a hilltop. The silhouette of the church against the sky looks really nice.
From Kazbegi it takes about one and a half hour to walk up to the church. I was there in the end of June and the meadows were in full bloom. It is a beautiful walk with the meadows, the birch forest and the mountains (the highest of them Mt Kazbeg) around.
The church was built in the 14th century, but the tower added later. It is locked so if you want to have a look inside you should pick up the key from the caretaker in Gergeti village on your way up.

Ananauri is a fortress and church complex. You will pass it if you are going north from Tblisi, along the Georgian Military Highway. The churches are from the 17th century and have some fine external decorations.
Climb the fortress to get a good view.
The blue water that can be seen in the background of the picture is the Zhinvali Reservoir.

The shared taxi I took from Tblisi to Kazbegi stopped here for me to see the place.
