Batumi is beautifully situated with the Black Sea on one side and the green hills on the other side.
Along the beach there is a long promenade with parks and cafes. It's a nice place for a walk. The beach is big and a pebble beach. A Monday in the end of June it was not many people on the beach but I can imagine there are more at weekends and in July - August.

Mtskheta, once the capital of Georgia, is nowadays a village with 10.000 inhabitants. There are a postoffice, a bank, a trainstation, several shops, cafes and restaurants.
Except Jvari and Sveti-Tshoveli there ar more sights to see like the Samtavro complex, the Armaziskhevi ruins including Roman-style baths and the Bebris Tsikhe castle.
From Tbilisi you can reach Mtskheta by bus, every half hour.

  • Metekhi Church - Georgia
    Metekhi Church
    by sachara
The Metekhi Church has a beautiful location, at a strategically important cliff at the north bank, in front of the Metekhi bridge.
The meaning of Metekhi is "place of a palace''
During the centuries there were a lot of changes at this fortificated place.
The first church was built here in the 5th century. There was also a palace. The palace and church were destroyed in the 13th century by the Mongols and in the same century rebuilt as a copie of the original church. The several times reconstructed palace is finally removed in the 18th century.
The church became a theatre in the 1970s and in the 1980s again a church.
From the terrace in front of the church you have nice views at the city.
At the terrace is a sculpture made by Amashukeli, one of the famous Georgian sculptors of recent times.

Apparently, going to the baths is a pretty popular social activity in Tbilisi. We rented a private bath for an hour at the "beehive" baths for $10. We also got massages (more like an elaborate bath ritual with kind of painful skin exfoliation) for $3 a person. There is a sitting room where you leave your clothes and are served hot tea and then the bath room with showers, the hot sulphur bath, a cold bath, a toilet and the massage area.
You can also go into the communal pool for a lot less, but we didn't do that.
The baths are definitaly a unique experience a relaxing activity for a dreary, cold day.

During our visit to the Mtatsmindis Park for the nice views, we saw women making nice mosaic with flowers and succulent plants in different colours. They were leaning and lying on wooden shelves, so it was not an easy job to do under these circumstances. The mosaic, they created, looked really nice.

The Jvari Church in Mtskheta is a classic example of early Georgian Christian architecture with its tetraconch form.
The Jvari church has always been a symbol for Mtskheta and Georgia.
In the 6th century first a small church is built and not much later the main church is built south of the first one.
The ancient church is situated high on a hill overlooking the valley. From here the views over the valley, Mtskheta and the convergence of the two rivers is fantastic.

From the terrace of the strategically situated Metekhi Church at the north bank you have a nice view at the old town at the south bank with its narrow streets. From here you can see the towers and roofs of the many churches in this area, like the Karis Eklesia, the Anchiskhati, the Sioni Cathedral, the Norasheni Church and the Jvaris Mama.
At the background you see the mountain with the huge television tower.

Just a few hundred metres from Sveti Tskhoveli is another church, Samtravo Church. This church is built on the site of Georgia’s first church and inside is the tomb of King Mirian and Queen Nana.
The main church was built in the 1130s and the small chapel (Tsminda Nino) beside the church dates from the 4th century.
The minibus stop for Tiblisi is on Davit Aghmashenebelis Kucha, just down from the church.

From the Mtatsmindis Park, we had a nice, but hazy view at the city of Tbilisi.
From here we could see very well its location in the valley of the Mtkvari River and we got our first impression of the size of the city and its surroundings.
A nice early morning start, allthough there was a cold northern wind, when we visited the park.

  • Sveti Tskhoveli in Mtskheta - Georgia

    Mtskheta
    by MalenaN
Mtskheta is a small town close to Tiblisi. The town is the spiritual centre of Georgia and have several old churches. The largest church is the cathedral of Sveti Tskhoveli (in the picture), which was built between 1010 – 1029. The ceiling is high and there are nice frescos inside the church. It is said that this is the place where Christ’s robe was buried, after it had been brought from Jerusalem by Elias.
On my way walking to Samtravo I passed a small museum with some archaeological finds. I was the only visitor and I don’t think I had to pay any entrance.

To go to Mtskheta I took a marshrutka (minibus) from Didube bus station in Tiblisi. The journey takes only 30 minutes and in June 2003 it was 0.80 lari.
