Davit Gareja - trekking to Udabno cave complex

by josephescu

Udabno monastery is located on a ridge high above the first monastery, the Lavra. It is made up of caves cut into the rocks across more than 500m of the cliff face. More than fifty rock-cut chambers, including churches, chapels, cells and a refectory survive, although the fronts of many have collapsed over the centuries. Wall paintings from the ninth or tenth century to the thirteenth survive in eight of the churches and chapels and also in the monks’ refectory.

Stylish outing

by Minashka

Old town of Tbilisi is very unique and beautiful! I loved going to Chardin street and hanging out in one of the cafes or restaurants there. Although a bit pricy, the small street offers a variety of restaurants from anything Chinese to Moroccan and a great outdoor seating. There's live music playing next to Chardin Rue #12 but can be heard almost anywhere. It is also a great place to find out about the latest fashion as people walking by are the true examples of it ;-)

Davit Gareja

by terrycowan

A trip to Davit Gareja is one of the best day-trips out of Tbilisi. The monastery complex dates to the 6th century and played an important role in Georgian history. Though not far from Tbilisi, and the old industrial city of Rustaveli, it is at the same time very remote. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Tbilisi. The first monastery complex that you arrive at is the Lavra Monastery. This contains the Church of St. Nicholas and the graves of St. Davit Gareja. The Udabno Monastery is a series of cave churches on the other side of the mountain. A trail winds up to the summit and then down the other side. At some points, the trail crosses over into Azerbaijan. By all means, visit these sites. The Russians used the valley below to train soldiers for Afghanistan. The explosions ruined many of the caves, but there is still quite a bit to see. The Refractory contains the most vivid frescoes....

Samtravo in Mtskheta

by MalenaN

Just a few hundred metres from Sveti Tskhoveli is another church, Samtravo Church. This church is built on the site of Georgia’s first church and inside is the tomb of King Mirian and Queen Nana. The main church was built in the 1130s and the small chapel (Tsminda Nino) beside the church dates from the 4th century. The minibus stop for Tiblisi is on Davit Aghmashenebelis Kucha, just down from the church.

Mtskheta

by MalenaN

Mtskheta is a small town close to Tiblisi. The town is the spiritual centre of Georgia and have several old churches. The largest church is the cathedral of Sveti Tskhoveli (in the picture), which was built between 1010 – 1029. The ceiling is high and there are nice frescos inside the church. It is said that this is the place where Christ’s robe was buried, after it had been brought from Jerusalem by Elias. On my way walking to Samtravo I passed a small museum with some archaeological finds. I was the only visitor and I don’t think I had to pay any entrance. To go to Mtskheta I took a marshrutka (minibus) from Didube bus station in Tiblisi. The journey takes only 30 minutes and in June 2003 it was 0.80 lari.

Kazbegi

by MalenaN

Arriving to Kazbegi from Tiblisi the shared taxi stopped at the main square. The town is not big at all, but only have 4000 inhabitants. Around the square are a few buildings, a hotel, a bakery and a restaurant and some kiosks. Kazbegi is situated in a valley about 1750 metres above sea level in the Caucasus region. The surrounding landscape is beautiful with impressive mountaintops (Mt Kazbeg is the highest peak with its 5047 metres). It is a lovely place, but at the same time it feels a bit strange.

by cachaseiro

5 minutes walk from the train station you have a giant football stadium.it holds 80 000 spectators, but the place is very run down.they were busy restoring it though, when i was there.it's still a very impressive stadium and a must see if you are a football fan.

odd architecture.

by cachaseiro

i saw this building as i enterd tblisi.i was later told that it fuctions as an administrative building.people did not seem to be proud of it at all, but i found it rather interesting in it's own bizarre way.
