View at Tbilisi from the Mtatsmindis park

by sachara

From the Mtatsmindis Park, we had a nice, but hazy view at the city of Tbilisi. From here we could see very well its location in the valley of the Mtkvari River and we got our first impression of the size of the city and its surroundings.A nice early morning start, allthough there was a cold northern wind, when we visited the park.

Tbilisi, view from the mountain top.

by sachara

By funicular railway we went up to the Mtatsmindis Park at the mountain top for a great, but a bit hazy view at the city.We sat in a cabin with many local girls. Because they thought I was also from their country I got also one of the girls on my lap. We laughed a lot together, when they found out I was not from their country or even from Russia.Half way the funicular railway is the Mama Daviti Church.

Tbilisi, Metekhi Church

by sachara

The Metekhi Church has a beautiful location, at a strategically important cliff at the north bank, in front of the Metekhi bridge. The meaning of Metekhi is "place of a palace''During the centuries there were a lot of changes at this fortificated place. The first church was built here in the 5th century. There was also a palace. The palace and church were destroyed in the 13th century by the Mongols and in the same century rebuilt as a copie of the original church. The several times reconstructed palace is finally removed in the 18th century. The church became a theatre in the 1970s and in the 1980s again a church. From the terrace in front of the church you have nice views at the city.At the terrace is a sculpture made by Amashukeli, one of the famous Georgian sculptors of recent times.

Ballet and National Art Museum

by nrgwise

Any ballet from a former Russian country is very cheap and definately worth going to.The National Art Museum is wonderful, with an amazing collection of Religious works from the 9th century and beyond and full of great paintings.I am a little biased as I volunteered there for two months and plan on returning.

Batumi

by MalenaN

Batumi is beautifully situated with the Black Sea on one side and the green hills on the other side.Along the beach there is a long promenade with parks and cafes. It's a nice place for a walk. The beach is big and a pebble beach. A Monday in the end of June it was not many people on the beach but I can imagine there are more at weekends and in July - August.

Ananauri

by MalenaN

Ananauri is a fortress and church complex. You will pass it if you are going north from Tblisi, along the Georgian Military Highway. The churches are from the 17th century and have some fine external decorations. Climb the fortress to get a good view. The blue water that can be seen in the background of the picture is the Zhinvali Reservoir. The shared taxi I took from Tblisi to Kazbegi stopped here for me to see the place.

Tsminda Sameba (Holy Trinity Church)

by MalenaN

Above Kazbegi, and the village Gergeti, at an altitude of 2170 metres, Tsaminda Sameba stands on a hilltop. The silhouette of the church against the sky looks really nice. From Kazbegi it takes about one and a half hour to walk up to the church. I was there in the end of June and the meadows were in full bloom. It is a beautiful walk with the meadows, the birch forest and the mountains (the highest of them Mt Kazbeg) around. The church was built in the 14th century, but the tower added later. It is locked so if you want to have a look inside you should pick up the key from the caretaker in Gergeti village on your way up.

Termal Baths

by linith

This is something a lot of people is missing. Just because i was with georgian people i had an occasion and i didnt miss it.In Tbilisi, almoust in the centre there are hot baths. U cant miss it. For boys it is swimming pool, with hot water, and than massage, made by old, naked man. For girls..........hot shower and massage (well, i should rather said that woman just washed us with soap)It is amazing experience, u will never forget, being neked and being massaged by old, extremally fat woman. Advise, do not take any silver rings, neckless or something like that, it will become black.

Kazbegi at the Georgian Military Highway

by tabibito-x

Go north from Tbilissi and follow the Gergian Military Highway...and simply enjoy the Caucasus! The last bigger village before the Russian border is Kazbegi/Gergeti. From here, you can see and climb Mt. Kazbek, one of the highest mountains in the Caucasus (more than 5000 metres). Unfortunately, foreigners are not allowed to cross the border. Walk up the hill to Sameba Tsminda - a nice, old church and a great panorama...For me, one of the most interesting places in Georgia (well, yes, I'm a mountain freak...)
