Service Taxi

by MalenaN

Are you going from Tblisi to Kazbegi the best way to do this is probably with a shared taxi. It cost slightly more then the minibus but is faster and more confortable. For Kazbegi the chared taxi is leaving from Didube. They leave when the taxi is full (four passengers) or with less people if they are willing to share the price. I paid 10 lari for the drive Tblisi - Kazbegi. Can't remember how long it took. Maybe four hours. The family sharing the taxi had a lot of laguage (they were shopping big bags of haselnuts and other things at the market before we took off).

Marshrutka

by tabibito-x

In Georgia, you will find busses, marshrutkas and trains. The latter only go to a few places and are not very reliable. Busses are often incredibly slow and narrow inside. Slightly cheaper but mostly faster are so called Marshrutkas - shared taxis. It's a great concept of transportation to be found almost all over Ex-Soviet countries. It first looks chaotic, but all marshrutkas have clearly defined routes and numbers. Jump in wherever you want, and wave and shout when you want to get out. Inner city marshrutkas usually charge 50 Tetri (around 25 cents). They also go to other cities and even to Yerevan

Travelling to Turkey overland

by maykal

Crossing the border from Batumi to Hopa in Turkey via the Sarpi/Sarp crossing is easy. The Georgian side were very friendly, and some of the guards joked about me giving them a dollar for cigarettes and vodka, but there was no pressure, no annoyance when I refused, and no searching of bags. The Turkish side was also simple, adn took less than five minutes. The biggest problem was getting to Hopa from the border. Taxi drivers know they can charge what they like, because you either take a taxi or you spend the rest of your life at the border...the only road to Hopa goes through a tunnel, which you can't walk through, and there are no buses and not enough traffic for hitching. The journey should cost no more that two million lira, but I ended up paying 10 million because the driver conveniently had no change...I was not a happy bunny, especially as I had to wait two hours before we left the...

The easiest way to get to Georgia from Azerbaijan is to take the train. On the map, it does not look far between Tbilisi and Baku, and there are no geographical obstacles in the way, but believe me, it is a never-ending journey! Trains in both directions took almost 24 hours, and are unbelievably slow...sometimes it felt as if I could have walked quicker! The border takes a long time to cross, and gives the border guards plenty of time to ask for 'official fees' and 'presents' from foreigners...I hid my dollars in my shoe, and just waved my credit card at them...and when it came to presents, I find that a bag of dirty washing is seldom accepted! Despite the slothfulness, the train is better than the bus as not only is it cheaper and more comfortable (there are toilets and room to stretch your legs on trains), but also you get a full night's sleep on the train (beds are comfortable, and...

Bus. Ever tried going to the mountains on the very curvy roads at crazy speed and sudden turns, being the first time in the mountains in your life?! Oh boy.. your stomach also gets 'curvy', head dizzy and everything begins turning around :) mountains, turns, pressure, thickening air. But the next time it was much better. Therefore what a beautiful views! Can only dream of them now.

Taxis and minibuses should cost you 1-3 Georgian Lari (GL), depending on the duration of your trip. Don't get swindled by a greedy taxi driver.

Q:  Is the beach nice in Batumi? Would you recommend going there? How is the water in September?

A: The beach is not sand, but golf ball sized stones. The promenade is quite long with a few activities scattered along it. It's relatively clean. But Batumi is better...
