Nightlife - but not as we know it

by CliffClaven Updated Feb 19, 2008

Nightlife and Tehran are not two words which often occur in the same sentence. On the other hand, there is a thriving café and restaurant scene where you can sit and watch the world go by over a coffee or soft drink or – whisper it – a beer lookalike which tastes surprisingly good after a day plodding the streets as a tourist. And for a real experience try the Armenian Club in the evening. Since it is officially a Christian restaurant, it is off-limits to Moslems. It is probably the only occasion you'll see women outside their home without a hijab during your time in Iran.

    Underground: So you wana Party!

    by dj_kam Updated Jul 29, 2007

If you have some how lost your mind and decided that Iran is the place you want to visit for the night life; then you better be pro. There are underground parties happening here and there with booze and girls some of which are even unmatched by western standards (i know its hard to believe but its true). Do some checking around, but beware, this kind of stuff is illegal here and it could get one in financial jam (if you know what I mean).

In Iran drinking and partying are done behind closed doors, so it’s best to have contacts and friends when you come here. Remember trust is a very important factor.

Dress Code: I have seen dumb people that wear suit and tie to a slam-fest parties (drink till you barf), so ignore them and just dress fresh and comfy.

    Mehrabad International Arrivals Terminal

Well, the Tokyo-Tehran flight usually arrives after 23.00 or later and there are many other international arrival/departures at all wee hours in the night. There were great many amounts of people waiting at the terminal to reunite with their loved ones.

Also, the money exchange centres are open for business.

Dress Code: Even on Iran Air, it's OK for women to remain hair uncovered etc., until the end of the flight alighting from the plane upon Iranian territory.

Darband: Siping on Chai, smoking ghelyoon...

by Karmacholo Written May 15, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Iran is not the place to go out and dance at night, at least not in a club. So, if you are not invited to a party, you should take advantage of being in this city on the foot of the Alborz Mountains.

In northern Tehran, just above Tajrish Square and at the beginning of a popular hiking track, is the night spot location called Darband (or Sar-e Band).

It is a collection of street-side cafes and open air restaurants that will show you the real side of Iran. In a relax atmosphere, dining on flat benches covered with Kilims, you will be served all kinds of Kababs, Yoghurt drink and dips, and can smoke your ghelyoon (Water pipe) while drinking some real good tea.

People are all around you, real Tehranis from all walks of life, taking advantage of their off time, enjoying life with their families, or scores of youth walking around, talking and laughing loud, and sampling the candies and sour delicacies offered by the street side vendors.

Iranians stay up late and start late on going out. So, don't expect things to get busy and interesting before 10 PM.

Almost all restaurants serve the same quality food. The further up you go, the more chic and expensive they become, and more "modern". I like the midrange ones that have their benches by the water and serve you in their gardens! It is just great!

Dress Code: However you like, but if interested in meeting interesting people, don't wear your work clothes or that work jeans. It is a casual place.
