    Pretty boxes
    by TheWanderingCamel
You'll find lacquer work pencil boxes in shops and bazaars all over Iran. Whether you buy a moderately priced modern one or a very expensive antique - and they can cost a fortune - they're lovely things, evocative of another age and a long tradition. Decorated with hunting and court scenes in the style of Savafid miniatures they are small, attractive and functional, light and virtually unbreakable - the ideal souvenir.

From just a few dollars for a Bazaar souvenir to thousands for a beautiful antique.

    Moses Baba

A treasure trove of antiques and curiosities, Moses Baba's shop has been a Tehran institution for 50 years. A fossickers delight.

Moses is an elderly member of Tehran's small Jewish community - the descendents of the Hebrews who were freed from their Babylonian captivity by the Persian Emperor Cyrus at the behest of his queen, Esther - herself a Jew - in 539BC. He loves to talk to visitors to his shop and MrL always make a point of calling in when he's in the city - and usually brings some treasure home with him.

Pottery and porcelain, elegant lacquer work, coins, jewellery, enamels and much, much more - the choice is yours.

    Delicious fresh nuts
    by TheWanderingCamel
Bursting with the most delicious array of nuts and dried fruits, and always full of people, Tavazo is one of only many Tehrani nut shops, but it's one of the very best.

The freshest of fresh nuts, wonderful dates from Bam, a bewildering variety of dried fruit, saffron and other spices - all the very best quality. You can choose from elaborately arranged gift packages of mixed fruit and nuts - an ideal gift if you are going to someone's house during your stay in Tehran - or do as we do and just buy in bulk for yourself. They are irresistible.

  • Fine miniature - Tehran
    Fine miniature
    by TheWanderingCamel
The art of miniature painting in Persia reached its pinnacle in the Savafid period of the 16th and 17th centuries and the tradition continues today.

Miniatures painted on bone or on pages of old books are readily available in shops throughout Iran. You may have to look a little further to find them painted and collaged on papier mache panels in imitation of early Savafid work, like the one shown here in the photograph. This work is beautiful, so fine and delicate, with subtle gilding and exquisite detail, the result of many hours of painstaking work. The finished work is lacquered so that it glows with a jewel-like richness.

  • Ferdoosi carpet bazaar - Tehran
    Ferdoosi carpet bazaar
    by iwys
The Ferdoosi Carpet Bazaar, just off Ferdoosi Square, may be the first place where you see the bewildering variety of Persian carpets there is to choose from. My advice would be to look around and ask questions, but don't buy anything here. The prices I was quoted in Tehran were far higher than the prices elsewhere in Iran.

If you do decide to buy a carpet here, bargain very hard indeed and preferably bring a local person to help you.

This carpet bazaar seemed to be particularly good for Qom carpets, so if you're not visiting Qom, this might be the place to buy one.

You can spend anything from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. The dealers will quote you prices in dollars.

To give you some idea of how expensive Persian carpets can be, the initial asking price for this small Qom carpet was $1,600. Of course, you don't pay the asking price, but the dealer really wasn't prepared to come down very much. It is beautiful though, isn't it?

Iran has a great tradition in nuts and spices. Alena offers a great variety of nuts and dried fruits and is a feast for the eyes too.

You will not believe the variety and quality in pistachio nuts they have. They also make a great present.

Less than 10 Euros are enough for a kilo.

Shopping in Tehran ranges from small, classy boutiques (I bought a manteau in one of those – great service and not unlike a boutique you would find in Paris), stalls in the bazaar or huge shopping malls such as this one pictured. It was modern and fresh, with all the latest fashions for men and women. The prices of course will vary according to where you shop, and there is something for every budget.

There are some souvenir shops about, but I only saw a handful situated in the area around the hotels.
