Satellite DFAC: DFAC / Chow Hall

by jonb64

Hey, the food is not too bad, especially when you get to dine with the Denver Bronco Cheerleaders in 2006, YES!!!! I'd have to say the whole roasted pigs they do on holidays, very well done. especially out in the middle of a war.

Iraqi Feast

by hen263

In Iraq you are either living on the base, eating in a DFAC, or one of the fast food joints in the base, or you are living on the economy, and just about no one lives outside the bases since it is not very safe. However, for almost two years I lived off the base and while we had a mini DFAC on site, we also got to enjoy Iraqi food.I have to admit, it is pretty good, but I am a glutton so that isn't saying much.Bread, lamb, chicken, red soup with beans, vegetables. Good stuff. Very similar to Jordanian food, so if you can't get to Iraq, Jordan will fit the bill.

Road side: Fresh Food

by I_AM_CAN

Well when you first see it happen it is a bit overwhelming. Iraq has alot of roadside "markets" and among them are some very very fresh meat products. It doesn't look all to sanitary to western world standards....but the Iraq people are surviving so it must work. You'll see fresh sheep, goat and lambs. Had a few kabobs from a place in Tirkit. didn't get to go there myself but the Chief of Police went into town for us. Everything was brought back a little while later piping hot. Had fresh bread and meat with pickled vegetables. Made a nice wrap...very tasty.

DFAC 2: New DFACs!

by american_tourister

The NEW dining facility (DFAC) is a huge hit and the troops love it. We had a grand opening on Thanksgiving Day and it was just overwhelmed. Our staff did a remarkable job and the displays were terriffic.Having American food in an American run facility makes a big, big difference when you are 10,000 miles away from home. We are very proud of what we have built here. Meat loaf, corn on the cob, salad. The pizza is good and so are the corndogs!

Can't remember the names(it was long time ago)but there are plenty of them. You can have nice buffets in all big hotels. Favorite dish was Masgof(or similar).Fish from river Tigris prepared on their unique way.

The restaurants are marvelous, all kinds of foods. You must try their tea and the different pastries. They dont have anything with pork, SORRY!Sorry, I forget.Normally you can go in and just enjoy yourself. You can have your tea or coffee outside because thats how the restaurant was designed. The best menu was the rice and soup and you have to try the kabobs.

in Baghdad is with no doubt: Khan Marjan. A khan is trade building of ancient times, almost the same as the khan in Egypt, a fondouq in Morocco or a karawansary in Turkey. The building was restored and changed into a restaurant. international and Iraqi specialities
