Best time to visit Israel

by unaS

Spring and Fall are best weatherwise.Mid to Late April to Mid June; and Early October to Mid November.Little or no rain, weather warm to cool, neither hot nor cold. One exception during those seasons are the Khamsin/Sharav heat waves that cannot be foretold. In both seasons there are holidays that will close down public transportation, shops, restaurants and such, so check the calendar carefully.Jewish Holiday Calendar Important Note: All Jewish holidays begin the *evening before* the date specified. So if it says that Rosh Hashanah is on 30 Sept. everything closes down **at the latest** by 1 hour before sunset on 29 Sept. The holiday ends after sunset. The above is true of every Shabbat too! Friday evening is the beginning of the Shabbat and it runs till after sunset on Saturday.

Is Israel a Safe Place to Visit?

by RhineRoll

Yes, Israel is a reasonably safe place to visit! Those who might doubt this due to the terror threat and missile barrages near the Gaza strip should consider the following: As for Germany,a very safe country with low crime and high standards, each year213,000 people die from drug or alcohol usage related diseases15,000 people die from treatment mistakes of doctors and hospitals6,000 people die from flu -- normal flu, not SARS or any other horror variant6,000 people die from road accidents -- formerly the figures were shocking 20,000 deaths per year, even today for each German, the likelihood to be killed or seriously hurt in a road accident during their life is nearly "1", which means a serious road accident will very likely happen to you once!Al Quaeda will have a pretty hard time even to come to par with what our doctors and nurses are doing to their patients! Let alone with what we...

A Date in the Park

by gilabrand

Is this an ordinary date in the park? If you think the answer is yes, take another look. Look at their body language. Look at how far apart they're sitting. Look at their conservative dress. What you are seeing is a "dosi-date," as it is jokingly called in these parts ("dos" is a popular slang term for religious Jews). Among certain sectors of the Orthodox population, young people are introduced by a matchmaker - a "shadkhan." In the olden days, the bride and groom only met under the wedding canopy. Nowadays, they do have some say in the matter. They are allowed to meet a few times to see if they hit it off. The trouble is, they are not allowed to be alone in a room together. So dosi-dates take place in public places. One of the favorite venues is a hotel lobby.

Not what you see on television

by aztraveler2

Israel is a wonderful place to visit; I have traveled to Israel twice. The last visit (2005) I rented a car and visited several towns along the Mediterranean coast (Haifa, Caeserea) and eventually made it to the Israel/Lebanon border at Rosh Hanikra. I had no difficulty at all.It is a compact country so getting to places of interest is fairly easy. Israelis will thank you for visiting their country and welcome you. Even though Israel has its share of challenges, life goes on every day. There are great restaurants, wonderful shawarma stands, enticing shops, and plenty of historical sites, especially in Jerusalem.Tel Aviv is very cosmopolitan and much more secular. Eilat is a great spot to relax for a few days and Masada & the Dead Sea are "must-sees". There is much to do and it will depend on one's interests what to put at the top of the list.A traveler to Israel needs to keep abreast of...

Camels, Bugs, Lizards and Deer

by Martin_S.

You will enjoy looking out for and observing the various types of life from the animal kingdom, from the large to the small you will find them all if you look. The camels are big and you can find them even near the roads and sometimes ON the roads.... The lizards, like the camels can be found everywhere and many, many types, this is one of the most common larger lizards, can be about 30 cm (a foot) in length. The deer or ibex feel right at home alongside people who do them no harm, but they are rather shy and will walk away from you as you try to approach them. They will come into small towns and eat the gardens....The last "guy" here is the Rhagodidae Solifuga (just call him "bug" for short) found him eating ants outside Arad...he would dart out of his hole, capture an ant, whip back into his hole for a few seconds and then reappear like Jack the Ripper to strike again..over the space...

General Impressions and Tips

by jabstevens

My impression of Israel , after spending two months in the country with my family to determine if we would migrate here , is somewhat mixed . Old Jerusalem , the deserts , the beaches , the country side of northern Israel , the modern metro-polis which is Tel Aviv , absolutely impressive and worth seeing . Nonetheless , The negative factor for me and my family was for the most part , the lack of hospitality and just sheer rudeness of Israelis , primarily , those working in the service / tourist industry . The rude , impatient , detached ¨I frankly could care less about your issue , question , request .etc “ attitude of many Israelis ( hotel receptionists , house keeping , restaurant staff , over all and in general ) really makes the experience somewhat bitter sweet . Tips# 1 Learn Hebrew ( They don´t like it when you assume they speak English , it´s a pride thing . )Even the Hotel...

Safety in Numbers

by gilabrand

If you are a paraskevidekatriaphobic – which I just discovered is the name for people with a morbid fear of the number 13 – then Israel may be just the place to visit for a cure. In Judaism, 13 is a positive number. Boys celebrate their bar-mitzvah, which marks their “coming of age,” at 13. “Today I become a man,” many bar-mitzvah boys say when delivering their first public speech, after being called up to recite a blessing over the Torah. Paradoxically, fear of Friday the 13th also has a semi-Jewish connection. According to the experts, the Last Supper – which was a Passover seder – was attended by Jesus and 12 guests. Guest number 13 was Judas, the person who allegedly betrayed him to the Romans, and the event took place on Friday. Number 7 also has good connotations in Judaism because the Sabbath falls on the 7th day. And Tuesday is the day of the week most sought after for weddings...
