Useful Hebrew Phrases

by tzuki

One thing I find fascinating when travelling is to learn a few phrases of the language I will be in tocuh with. It is a form of how to get in touch to the local people where we travel. So make sure you learn a bit of Hebrew, a few phrases, before you get to Israel. These are the ones, I have used most:- SHALOM: means ´peace´ or general greeting as "hello"- BOKER TOV: good morning- EREV TOV: good evening- LAILA TOV: goodnight- KEN: yes- LO: no- SLIJA: Sorry- BEVAKASHA: please- TODA: thank you- TODA RABA: thanks very much- HAONEG SHELI: my pleasure- MAGNIV !: cool!- TA'ASE HAIM: have a good time- LEHITRA´OT: see you- YALLA-BYE: bye bye

Dynamic Map and Route Planner

by Bregman

There are several sites where you can find dynamic maps and route planners of Israel, only most of them are Hebrew only. One of the best map sites, used for years by Israelis, now has an English version of the map. So, if you need to locate a place in Israel or get driving instructions go ahead and look in http://www.emap.co.il/eng_index.asp.Another good one with English support is http://www.atlasct.com/global/israelenglish.

Visit Tel Arad

by Martin_S.

Tel Arad is an ancient city for which the modern city of Arad is named. It makes for a very nice day hike from Arad. There is a Canaanite well & has the only Israelite Altar dated from the 1st Temple period to be found outside Jerusalem. On a beautiful day, looking out over the ruins of ancient Tel Arad to the modern city where I live. If you look closely you can just see us there on the horizon. You should also notice the green fields in the near distance, those are the vineyards of "Ramat Arad" (the winery itself is located just off to the left of the picture, up on the mountain plateau nearby) and they produce several award winning wines.

Weather - When to go to Israel

by FruitLover

Depending on what you're after, Israel is year-round destination. The ideal months to visit are April-June, September-October. At these times you can rely on good to excellent weather, yet avoid the sometimes extreme heat and humidity of July & August, when temperatures can climb to 35-40 Celsius degrees and 80-90% humidity. There's relatively decent weather in Jerusalem & Zefat area [upper Galilee] virtually year-round. Winter [December to March] along the Mediterranean coast is mild. You can be sitting outside enjoying a beer in a T-shirt in Tel Aviv, Haifa or Herzliya on February.

Amos Oz - A Tale of Love and Darkness

by magor65

Coming home from a journey doesn't mean that the journey is completely over. You relive the events again and again, share the experiences with others, and naturally feel the necessity to broaden your knowledge of the place. Especially if a place is as fascinating as Israel. No wonder that now, about 6 months after coming back, I still can't give up this subject. The seed was sown...I've just read a book by Amos Oz. It's an autobiographical novel in which this Israeli writer born in Jerusalem depicts several generations of his forefathers and their lives, first in Lithuania and Ukraine, then in Palestine. The birth of Israeli state, which I knew only from a few 'dry' encyclopedic entries, here gets a very human dimension. The book, although full of very sad or even tragic events, emanates with unique warmth and humour. Great writing, where the background for family story is the history of...

Culture Shock!Israel

by jadedmuse

Before visiting a country for the first time, I like to acquaint myself with its culture and customs. Although I feel that I know Israel fairly well (speaking as a non-Israeli), I couldn't resist picking up this book after thumbing through it at the bookstore and finding it to be worth a chuckle. The book in question is called "Culture Shock! Israel - A Guide to Customs and Etiquette" by Dick Winter. (Actually "Culture Shock!" is a series and you'll find a number of countries within the series.) Here's the book jacket teaser: "Israel is a land of stark contrasts: the old and the new, the secular and the religious, the Jew and the Arab. What is it that's so unique about Israelis? And how do you deal with them? CULTURE SHOCK! Israel will show you. Dick Winter takes you into the mind of the average Israeli and reveals why they are what they are today." Like I said, I really got a kick out...

Friends In Deed: Inside the U.S.-Israel Alliance

by jadedmuse

This book would probably only be of interest to Americans (and maybe Israelis), since it explores the history of the ties between Israel and the United States - dating back to Harry Truman and before the declaration of the state of Israel, to contemporary times. I found myself alternately surprised, disturbed, proud, shocked, and embarassed while reading this book. Great introduction to Israel/U.S. relations.Written by Dan Raviv and Yossi Melman.
