The Other Israel - Voices of Refusal and Dissent

by jadedmuse

For those of you who want to know if all Israelis think alike, this book is for you. With a forward by the respected Israeli columnist Tom Segev, this book is a compendium of interviews of different Israelis ranging from government officials and soldiers to intellectuals, professors and journalists, all of whom believe to some degree or another that "the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, with its settlement construction and colonial policing, has undermined Israel's democratic ideals and liberal values while deeply compromising its security and moral authority." I found this book interesting because I very often disagreed with what was being postulated by these "dissenters" - and yet who am I to agree or disagree? It's easy to play armchair quarterback when we live such a completely removed and different life than the ones lead by Israelis and Palestinians - the players in...

The Yom Kippur War

by jadedmuse

Written by Abraham Rabinovich (a journalist who reported on said war for the Jerusalem Post), this book is one of my favorites. I learned so much by reading it, and was glued to each page. I'm not much for military and wars, but this was so fascinating I couldn't put it down once I started it. It still blows my mind: "Rabinovich's masterly narrative begins as Israel convinces itself there will be no war, while Egypt and Syria plot the two-front conflict. Then, on Yom Kippur, Saturday, October 6, 1973, we see Arab armies pouring across the shattered Bar-Lev Line in the Sinai and through the Golan defenses. Even the famed Israeli air force could not stop them. On the Golan alone, Syria sent 1.460 tanks against Israel's 177, and 115 artillery batteries against Israeli's 11. And for the first time, foot soldiers wielding anti-tank weapons were able to stop tank charges, while surface-to-air...

Save money on Hotel in Israel

by silasm

If you want to save money on hotels in Israel you should consider staying in Bethlehem in Palestine. I was staying at the Zion Hotel in Jerusalem and it is a 4 star. However I did not talk to anyone and after two days so I moved to the Alexander Hotel in Bethlehem and found the price of the hotel to be a real bargain. I saved 70% per night by staying in Bethlehem. The tourism is very low in Bethlehem so they cut their prices to attract customers. It cost me $10 by taxi to get to Old Jerusalem.

With the Cellphone in Israel

by travellingdan

If you want to stay in Israel for a little longer, it's definitely worth buying a prepaied phonecard. You can get them easily everywhere - e.g. already at Ben Gurion Airport. After friends recommendet Orange as provider, I bought a SIM-card there. It was around 100 NIS and loaded it with another 100 NIS. From that time on I had my own local cellphone number.By the way: if you travel to the West Bank, Orange will work in most of the bigger cities and near settlements (so you can use your cellphone as settlement-finder!)If you are staying within the Westbank it might be better to get an Palestinian provider, like Jawwal. The bad thing about it is, that you have to remember another number ;-)

Bethlehem - Palestine

by magor65

Bethlehem is a city surrounded by high walls. Looking at it I couldn't help thinking of the Berliner wall.I realized again how meaningless an individual being is in confrontation with all that huge machinery of politics. We are to a large extent determined by the place we were born and raised in - its political system, religion, set of values. People are often placed on 'opposite sides of barricades' because of circumstances rather than their own choice.

Meeting in Jerusalem

by magor65

In Jerusalem I met Gila and her husband Haim. After a short visit in their apartment ( I had an opportunity to see the beautiful pictures painted by Gila), they took me and my friend Eva for a drive in a new part of Jerusalem. It was the only chance for us to see something apart from the Old City and the biblical places - so we are very grateful for that. But there is still another thing I would like to stress here - on those two occasions I felt I met good friends rather than the people I saw for the first time in my life.

Meeting in Masada

by magor65

My short meetings with the VT-ers from Israel belong to my nicest recollections from the trip. Martin and his wife Zohara visited me in Masada Youth Hostel. They had to make quite a big effort to drive from Arad to Masada late in the evening, following my phone call made just a few hours before. With my friends from the group joining us, we spent a very enjoyable evening together

Masada - up the Snake Path

by magor65

There's a cable car that can take you to Masada. But I would encourage everybody to climb up the top along the Snake Path. The trail is not hard and it's absolutely safe thanks to the steps cut out in stone. The ascent takes about 40 minutes. We left our hostel early enough to see from the top the sunrise over the Dead Sea. It was a wonderful experience. At first a reasonably fast climb to the top while we glanced at the beautiful sights around and then a truly breath-taking performance given by the sun. I felt as if it was just for us - a small group of the chosen spectators.

Holy milk-thistle (Silybum maritimum)

by Martin_S.

Yes, I have many books on plants, animals, birds and insects and I try to identify each and every one that I see or photograph, after all they are living in Israel also. This is a very common Gdilan Matzoie or Holy milk-thistle (Silybum maritimum). My book tells me that you can differientiate between it and the wild artichoke because of the silvery patches on its leaves. One thing for sure it is prickly and you do NOT want to fall into or even rub up against this while hiking. When I took this picture it was for two reasons, first because of the flower, but second because of the plastic cup alongside it. Friends said "crop the picture to take out the plastic garbage"...but it is just for THAT REASON that I do NOT....how much MORE BEAUTIFUL it would be if people did not throw garbage to begin with, don't you agree.

The "ShikShak" (Holopterus Spinosus)

by Martin_S.

This is a decent picture of "ShikShak" (Holopterus Spinosus). According to what my books tell me this bird is more commonly found in the areas where there are fish ponds, but this guy got lost I guess, we saw him along the shore of the Yarkon River in Tel-Aviv.
