Favorite thing: Nazareth is the largest city in the North District of Israel. The city is interesting because it is described in the New Testament as the childhood home of Jesus. That’s why it is a center of Christian pilgrimage. It has many shrines commemorating biblical events.
Nazareth was the home of Joseph and Mary and the site of the Annunciation according to the Gospel of Luke. Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would have Jesus as her son.
Joseph and Mary resettle in Nazareth after fleeing to Egypt from their home in Bethlehem according to the Gospel of Matthew.
The differences and possible contradictions between these two accounts of the nativity of Jesus are part of the Synoptic Problem.

Favorite thing: For those people who is already 50 or 60 years old the name of Nazareth is bringing back memory from far 1970th when the Scottish rock group Nazareth was very popular all over the world including even the USSR.
I grew up in atheism and, shame on me, I heard the name of Nazareth for the first time when I listened to the music of the Scottish group with such a strange name. I asked what their name meant and got an answer - it meant the name of a town where Jesus had spent his childhood… It was in far 1972.
I hope you can imagine young Sergey (future VT well-known member, haha!), listening to their music and dreaming to visit real Nazareth one day… Believe it or not - my dream has come true in spring of 2009.
Watch and listen to their Love Hurts, Sunshine and Holy Roller.

Favorite thing: We were informed that this is the "main" and "central" christian church in Nazareth. We did not have information on its history or origins, but will find out and add later. We were not dressed "properly" to be able to enter the courtyard or church so were only able to see from the outside. I am always totally blown away by the money and effort put into religious structures and maintaining religious infrastructure. If the same money was spent on improving living conditions I wonder if there would be poverty??

Favorite thing: Modern day Nazareth is a bustling Arab city, the unofficial capital of the Arab sector in the Galilee. Built over many hills above the Jezreal Valley, the streets are steep!
