It was a coin toss to put this tidbit here or in the cultural section but I opted here. One thing that comes up so often is the difference of Hebrew spoken here as opposed to Jerusalem or even Tel Aviv. The variant can be so strong that even if you've gotten by well with a phrase book vocabulary in the center of the country it could be not understood up here. Now many Israelis fault the good people of Tiberias for this and many other " cultural" things but in this particular one they would be wrong. According to the National Language Institute the Hebrew that is spoken in Tiberias is the closest to Biblical Hebrew throughout Israel the only version that is more precise is that of the Yemenite Jews. So don't feel bad if you're misunderstood, many of us are!
Tiberias is North near the countries of Lebanon and Syria, there is an area that is very strategic and Israel will guard the area even if it means to the death. The area is Golan Height they will not let go of it, so now military soldiers and citizen are armed. So be very care in areas like this, don't be silly and just walk up and try to pick up someone gun without permission. Not that he going to let you touch it. Just take pictures like I did.
