It's hard to believe today, but this was once one of the most important places in Israel. Around 200 AD this was a center for scholars, like Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi. Some of them are burried in the nearby Bet Shearim. This was where the Mishna was canonized and parts of the Jerusalem Talmud were written here.
But, you can enjoy the place without going to deep into this Jewish stuff. The mosaic alone is worth the trip here.
