  • Tip Rating:
  • The haredi people in their 'funny' clothings. Belive it or not, that was one of the original ideas when they started to wear the black suits and matching hats. They wanted to be different and wanted to be looked at. If you try to go close and shoot a picture of the haredi's they smile at you, because this is marketing of their religion.

Internet Access in the Old Walled City
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jerusalem may have been around in one form or another since the First Temple, but it's not until you're scurrying down the narrow streets of the Christian Quarter and suddenly realize you need to email your sister to advise that you found that whatever-it-was she asked you to look for her, that you stop for a moment and shake your head....You've just passed under a sign that says "Holy Rock Cafe"! That's funny.

But seriously - internet access is not a problem in the Old Walled City. You'll find several reasonably priced internet cafes in the Christian Quarter. The one I used alot was the "Free Line Internet Cafe" (a few doors down and across from the "Holy Rock"!).

The Shrine of the Book is part of the Israel Museum and it is the home of some exceptional archaeological finds, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and other rare ancient manuscripts with totally awesome stories, if you know how to read them. The dome covers a funky structure which is two-thirds below the ground, and is reflected in a pool of water that surrounds it (this looks pretty cool).

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and sacred to three religions : Judaism , Christianity and Islam.

In hebrew we call it Yerushalayim and in arab it is Al-Kuds (the holy).

There are more than 700,000 residents in the city.

  • Tip Rating:
  • go to the wailing wall(ha kotel hamaaravi),touch the wall,it works, you will feel strange!then go up to the mount moriah,if it is not closed, you will see the mosque al-aksa,the third holiest place of islam, after mecca and medina;then finish with the holiest place for christianity(or is it vatican?),the holiest sepulchre, you will see the place where jesus is supposed to be buried, but the tomb is empty,of course!it is empty, but you will have to pay to see it

I worked during one whole year at the youth hostel:ha'ir ha'atiqa, which is the official youth hostel in the old city;once came a group of tourists asking if is possible to sleep in a cheaper place;and the manager answered:yes,go to an another youth hostel in the area,if you want to be killed,if you want to be raped... but do not complain afterwards;finally, they went to the swedish youth hostel, which is not swedish, but full of palestinian men who love swedish girls

we woke up around 0730 everyday and left the hostel around 0900. one morning, we talked in the old town (well, actually we lived there) and found a bread shop. the good smell and home-liked environment made me hungry. we bought a bread/pastry with egg. it costs US$1.5/5 shekels. we (two girls) shared it and drunk a lot of water. that was the way we saved money.

Archeologists contine to dig and uncover sections of the old city of Jerusalem. This shows some of the new digs just outside the area of the wailing wall. They believe it may have been an annex to the Temple complex. This area is not yet open to the public.

Here you can see along one of the outer walls of the old city. Below it you have the new and modern road leading into "new" Jerusalem. You can get an idea of the size of the walls by the cars and people below.
