Jerusalem Cinematheque: Celluloid Nights
  • Tip Rating:
  • Probably one of the nicest located cinemas in the world overlooking the Hebron Valley and the walls of the Old City. Two auditoria, schedule of the old and new, late night screenings at weekends, home of the International Jerusalem Film Festival. The General Manager - Lia van Leer - is an institution in her own right in Israel, and was one of the first to (successfully) challenge the religious stranglehold in the city on not allowing anything to be open over the sabbath (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset)

    Dublin: Irish Pub: Happy Hour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dublin is a growing chain of Irish pubs in Israel. They have two other locations in Rehovot and Herzliya but I found that this location is the biggest and has the best layout out of any of them. The best time to go is during happy hour as they have a limited time offer of buy one drink and receive your second for free. Generally, the Israeli people are not big drinkers so this was always a win situation for the pub. The offer a wide variety of both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, specializing in their wide variety of beers on tap and in bottles. Food is also available and it should be noted that the food is not kosher, but no pig products are used at this location (unlike the Rehovot pub which serves dishes that contain ham). They are very fond of foreignors in this pub and the staff speaks excellent English. During the early hours, traditional Irish music is played but toward the busy evening hours the lights are dimmed and the music becomes more rock and roll.

    Pants are a requirement.

    Sol: Sol
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is more of a kind of a bar that offers some food as well. Place is rather full in the weekend and somehow I heard it is trendy this days. I guess I will need to check it out in my next visit.

One picture better then 1000 words
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just see how peaceful and relax it can be at night. Life is not like seeing on TV, so when you visit this area you find out what is the real life in this place.

The Old City: The Lights of the City

  • Old Jerusalem at Dusk - Jerusalem

Old Jersusalem viewed at night is quite spectacular. The Western Wall is well lit and many people are still milling about and saying their prayers at the wall. They have events at the Citadel, so check with you hotel for a listing.

As everywhere in Jerusalem, people are dressed very casually. But of course ladies have their heads and shoulders covered for entrance into the holy places.

I think you can find nightlife...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I think you can find nightlife in the suburbs and in New Jerusalem (outside the gates). There's no nightlife in the old city as far as I know.

There are lots of good bars in...
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are lots of good bars in Jerusalem. For a mix of travellers and Israelis, try The Arizona Bar and The Underground. Both on Jaffa street, just by Zion Square. There is a reasonably priced hostel above The Arizona Bar, lots of South Africans stayed here. The Underground is divided into two rooms. The main bar and the cavernlike 'underground' dancefloor after which it gets it name. This second place is easily missed if you don't push through the crowds in the main bar. I didn't discover it until my second visit. Here they play rave and dance music, until the small hours. The Arizona Bar is just one room, although you can be invited onto the DJ's balcony over the bar if you fancy yourself as a funky dancer. The thing that always bought me back to the Arizona was Carlos the Barman. The guy was an absolute nutter with a Tequila Slammer. He'd get one of those strong plastic cups, filling it with a massive shot of Tequila, then top it up to halfway with sprite. Putting a large cloth over the top, he then preceded to jump around the bar bashing the bottom of the glass against the wooden frame surrounding the small bar ( kinda' ranch style as was the theme of the place.) You ended up with a glass of foaming, not too sweet firewater, which you had to neck in one; more liquid than your usual slammer but it goes down easy. After a few minutes in kicks the rosy glow, hello party Arizona. ( Jeez, was that me dancing on the balcony lastnight??) Carlos got so good in the end he could slam four tequilas a time this way. Sad to say the last time I saw Carlos he was sleeping on a bench down the bottom of Ben-Yehuda. We tried to get him to join us in our valley, he never came tho'.

Anything goes, including a well slung uzi.
