Stone of the Annointment where they put Jesus after his death.

"Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the council, and a disciple of Jesus, went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took the body of Jesus down." (Luke 25:53)
The mother of Jesus was there.

Migdal David (David's Tower or David's Citadel), one of those icons that appear everywhere as a symbol of Jerusalem, is an outright case of mistaken identity. This white phallic-shaped tower that dominates the Old City skyline, which everyone thinks was built by King David, is just what it looks like, if you look again - a minaret. King David never set foot there.

The lower section of the so-called Tower of David was actually built by Herod the Great, known for his mania for monumental architecture (and a few other manias, among them paranoia, which led him to execute several members of his family). The massive stones of the tower have some of the distinctive architectural features of the Western Wall, such as the beveling around the edges of the stones.

Today, Migdal David is a museum. Before you go in, take a good look at the outside walls. The Herodian stones stand out clearly from the rest, rising to a height of 30-40 feet. The rest of the tower is a Turkish addition.

In fact, the only sign of King David you will find in David's Citadel is a bronze copy of Verrocchio's "David," a Renaissance sculpture of the young David (clothed, as opposed to Michelangelo's famous paragon of male nudity), a gift to Jerusalem from the city of Florence.

Outside the Walls: Dormition: The Last Supper Hall- Pelican symbol
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Pelican is a symbol of the atonement and the Redeemer and is often found in Christian murals, frescos, paintings and stained glass. The pelican was believed to wound itself in order to feed its young with its own blood.

Allusion is even made to this belief in "Hamlet" (act iv): "To his good friend thus wide I'll ope my arms And, like the kind, life-rendering pelican, Repast them with my blood."

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): Rock of Ages
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Western Wall (Kotel) is constructed of limestone. The edges of the stones have a kind of chiseled border around them, a design typical of King Herod (first century BCE) who built the wall as a retaining wall for the Temple Mount. Notice that there is no cement or mortar holding them together. As you look up, the stones get smaller. This is because stones were added over the centuries. The base of the wall is actually about twenty feet below ground.

One of the stones is more than 40 feet long, and weighs 400 tons. This is the largest stone ever quarried by man - nothing near its size exists in Greece, in the pyramids, or in Manhattan. No crane today can even lift such a stone. How it got there is an engineering marvel. Others stones are over 100 tons. These stones can be viewed in the archeological tunnels that have been opened in the past few years.

One theory is that the quarry was located to the north of the Temple Mount and at a higher elevation, so that the builders could push the stones into place using the lever and pulley systems existent at the time.

Mount of Olives: Carmel of the Pater Noster [=Our Father]
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many legends around Mount of Olives and this site, specifically. This is where Jesus came after an evening with Martha, Mary and Lazarus - to pray with His disciples, and it is believed that here He taught them the Universal Prayer which unites all Christians and touches the very heart of mankind, the "Our Father", The "Pater Noster".

Here you can find 139 ceramic plaques of the Lord's Prayer, in any language on earth you have in your imagination.

In 326 CE, shortly after arriving in the Holy Land, Constantine's mother, St. Helena, began building on the Mount of Olives the Basilica of the ELEONA, from elaion in Greek, meaning olive grove. [The Basilica was also referred to as the Church of the Disciples]. The Basilica was destroyed and rebuilt twice, but the memory of Jesus' teachings remained.

The present church built, on the middle of 19th century, by The Princess de la Tour d'Auvergne, who had wanted this Carmelite monastery attached to the ancient Grotto as a witness to perpetual prayer

The Old City Gates: The Gates of the Old walled City

  • Gates of walled Jerusalem - Jerusalem

Today a visitor can enter the Old City of Jerusalem by one of seven gates. Some gates were named by location. The Jaffa Gate faces West towards Tel Aviv and Jaffa. The Damascus Gate is in the North wall where a traveler would enter if he had come from Galilee, the Golan Heights and Damascus. The Zion Gate is, logically, on Mt. Zion near the traditional Tomb of David and site of the Upper Room of the Last Supper. The Dung Gate faces South towards the Hinnom Valley where refuse from the city was dumped in former times into the Hinnom Valley. The Sheep Gate (or, St. Stephen's Gate, or Lion's Gate) is next to the sheep market, and so on.

The present walls around the Old City were built from 1537 to 1541 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent after the Ottoman conquest of Israel. At that time most of the ancient walls were reduced to rubble. Suleiman ordered that Jerusalem be fortified to protect its people against marauding Bedouins.
