Outside the Walls: Church of the visitation
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is where St. John's mother Elizabeth met Virgin Mary who arrived from Nazareth and thats also the place where Mary said the Magnificat, "My soul doth magnify the Lord..." In the yard of the church you can see the magnificat in 42 languages. (i will add a photos of it later on) This is one of the most beautiful churches that i've seen in Israel, all of its garden and outside area is so peaceful and beautiful. Stepping out of its gate there's an amazing view of all the valley and Ein Kerem. I think that if i would have travelled there alone i'd have stayed there for a longer time just for the relaxing atmosphere and view.

    Outside the Walls: Dormition Abbey
  • Tip Rating:
  • The German- Catholic church & monastery of Dormition in Mount Zion was inaugurated on 1910 in honour of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and is one of the most magnificient buildings in the city. It's similar by style to overlooking the Rhine river Worms Cathedral . The architecture is a combination of western styles, especially the Romanesque & Jugendstil , with oriental elements like stones' domes and arches. The diameter of the rotonda is 14.5m, and the height of 34m gives a feeling of large space. The last Supper Hall, The Sleeping Virgin, King David's Tomb are here.

The complex of buildings includs a consulate, hospital, hospices and kitchens for Russian Orthodox pilgrims. The cathedral was built in 12 years starting 1860, in northern- Baroque, Italian Renaissance style. This style is typical to Russian churches built on the 15- 16th centuries. Check the similarity to Moskva, Kremlin's cathedrals .

This church which kown as the "Russian Church" was built by Alexander III of Russia. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most conspicuous sanctuary in the Holy City, The seven golden domes were regilded just in time for the Jubilee year - 2000. Its location is just near the mount of olives and above Kidron Valley and it really is impressive... at least from a distance, i wasn't inside this church so i can only speak about my impression from its outside. (little tip.... its even much nicer to look at at the afternoon hours / sunset time hours )

    Outside the Walls: The Coenaculum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is another of the religious "must-sees", since it is widely regarded as the site of the Last Supper between Jesus and his Apostles. At one point, this place was turned into a mosque (reason for which there's Arabic writing across the stained glass window.) As is the norm with most religious places, this site was converted into a church and the architecture is reminiscent of the Middle Ages. I found it hard to imagine twelve Galileans breaking bread here, but I guess that is why we rely on our faith when our imagination fails us. Note: see next tip for funny story that happened on my last trip here....

Outside the Walls: Chagall Windows, Haddasah Ein-Kerem [II]
  • Tip Rating:
  • Inspired by the Bible: "Song of degrees. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord" (Psalms, CXXX, 1), the stage is sunk under ceiling level. The synagogue is made of Mizzi Ahmar(Arabic), a Jerusalem's reddish stone, and is lighted, naturally through the windows. Every window is 2.5m high, introduces a biblical verse from 'Ya'acov [Jacob] blessings', and divided to 12 parts. The windows are painted in 12 different colours, the colours of the great priest's tunic.
