  • If you find yourself in French Square (the central square of Jerusalem), pay attention that on entering the square all transport facilities ALWAYS stop at the red light. It is not easy, why. This square is sometimes called Red Square.

    Founded in 1965, Israel Museum, Jerusalem (IMJ) is one of the great museums of the world and an absolute must see on any visit to Jerusalem. The main problem, however, is that it is so big that even one day could not do it justice (especially if you are like me and start to glaze over after 2-3 hours in such environs). Its a purpose built group of buildings on a specifically landscaped site. As you enter you are confronted with a waterway and fountains, edged by ancient artefacts. The path leads to the sculpture garden (Henry Moore, Picasso, Rodin, among ohers) - which is a glorious place to see the sunset. Here is also sited is the extraordinary Shrine of the Book and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Arts wings features major international exhibitions, as well as its permanent collection and the Design department. The Archaelogical Wing houses prehistoric artefacts through to Roman and Byzantine: there's also a Judaica & Jewish Ethnography Wing. That's not all - lots of other exhibitions from glass to anthroplogical. Opening times: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 10am - 4pm Tuesday 4pm - 9pm Thursday 10am - 9pm Closed Sundays Entrance fees: (price is for the whole day and you can come and go as you please) NIS 42 (adults) NIS 21 (children 5-17) NIS 30 (students) NIS 21 for adults on a return ticket within 1 month Free entrance for all children, 4pm - 9pm on Tuesday and Thursday

    A beautiful tranquil corner of Jerusalem, away from the dust and heat and historic sounds of endless war - a green subuorb with old golden stone houses and plenty of trees. On a hillside with marvellous views, it has cool breezes which are a welcome relief in the heat of the local summer, producing an atmosphere of Tuscany, here in the Middle East. A place where people of all religions and nationalities live happily side by side.

    Two points of interest: 1. It's fascinating to go down the cavernous steps into the bowels below the church - also widely believed to be where Christ was imprisoned the night before he was crucified. Check out the photos: main one shows steps leading down to the prison chamber area; second one shows a podium which is likely the place where Caiphus would have held his mock “trial” immediately following the arrest of Jesus. 2. The view over the City of David (the oldest part of Jerusalem....over 2000 years old, which is basically almost incomprehensible) which is currently being excavated, and the vista of the valleys surrounding Jerusalem are wonderful.

  • Visit the 'Shrine of the Book' at the Israeli Museum. This is the original parchment first testament book, written in ancient Hebrew (what is always amazing to me is that even though the book is written in 'ancient' Hebrew I can still read almost all of it using modern Hebrew, just think of reading a document over 2,000 years old without a professors help !!!!). You should see this before you go to Qumran on the Dead Sea.

    One of the reason we were in Bethlehem is to visit the Church Of Nativity. Here lies the silver star with Latin inscription 'Hic De Maria Virgine Jesus Christus Natus Est' which means 'Here Christ Was Born'
