The Rock of Mount Moriah inside the Dome. Beneath the Dome of this magnificcent building lies the rock of Mount Moriah. It is 15 yards long, 12 yards wide and rises to a height of 2 yards above the ground. This is the traditional rock where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Moslems believe that Abraham took his son Ishmael to sacrifice, and not Isaac. They also believe that the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven in a night journey from this rock.

Temple Mount: Temple mount - Al Aqsa mosque
  • Tip Rating:
  • Al aqsa mosque is the biggest mosque in Jerusalem (over 5000 people can pray here) and it is concidered to be one of the most holy places for the Muslims (the third after Mekka and Medina). The meaning of Al Aqsa is the farthest , The farthest mosque. A lot of people think that Al aqsa is the golden domed building but this is the dome of the rock.

Temple Mount: The Dome of the rock
  • Tip Rating:
  • the Dome of the rock (in Hebrew Kipat Ha'sela and in Arabic Kubat a'Sachara) is one of the most famous monuments in the world. A lot of people think that this is a mosque and sometimes even confuse with Al-Aqsa mosque but this is not a mosque. The dome was built in 690 (more or less) and it is one of the most ancient and preserved Mulsim buildings.

Temple Mount: Summer Pulpit, Haram ash-Sharif
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Summer Pulpit was built by the Mamluks in the 14th century AD, inside the grounds of the Dome of the Rock mosque. It was later destroyed and rebuilt by the Ottomans. It was used for public speaking to worshippers.

Temple Mount: What to do on Saturday in Jerusalem
  • Tip Rating:
  • The rules for visiting the Temple Mount *currently* (March, 2008) are morning hours only, Sunday - Thursday. This can change without notice. Check at your hotel and with the policeman posted at the entry. Shabbat hours: Most Jewish sites are closed from sundown on Friday to Sundown on Saturday. Does not include Sunday. The Israel Museum is open on Shabbat. Getting there would be a problem because there is no public transportation during Shabbat in Jerusalem. You would have to take a taxi - Shabbat rates are 2 (not 1), like late night rates. The Old City is probably your best choice for touring on Saturday.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Omar Mosque, the sacred place of the Moslem. I learned from my VT friend Martin_S that it is also called Al-Aksa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock , because at its centre is the rock upon which it is believed that Mohammed ascended to heaven.

Temple Mount: The dome of the rock and the...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The dome of the rock and the al-aqusa-mosque Two very important buildings for the moslems, the most important behind Mekka and Medina. In the dome of the Rock is the Rock from which Mohammed rised to heaven. It'S a very amazing building: The outside is all made of blue tiles, the inside is made of wood. Behind the dome is the al-aqusa-mosque. It's inprepossesing, but it'S the more important of the two buildings
