The Old City Gates: The new gate
The new gate is the entrance to the Christian quarter on the old city of Jerusalem. The gate is called the new gate because he is the newest from all the gates of the old city (he was built in 1887 to help the christians to pass between the walls. The gate is in front of the Notre dame de Jerusalem. Other names of the gate are : Bab al Jdid (the new gate in Arab) and Bab Abed El-Hamid (the gate of the sultan Abed El Hamid).

The Old City Gates: Jaffa Gate
This was were we parked and began to walk around Jerusalem. It is known as Jaffa Gate (in English and Hebrew) as this was the road that went to Jaffa port. In Arabic is called "the Gate of the Friend" (in reference to Abraham). At the entrance at our right we can see David Tower

Be surrounded by honey-coloured walls which are the cluster of narrow streets and great churches and temples for over two miles. These walls represent layer upon layer of history. There are eight gates to the Old City, seven of which are open to people and cars; however there is a belief of the eighth one - the Golden Gate - sealed by the Muslims in the 7th century and in which tradition said that will only open on Judgement Day. The gates are all know by their Arab, Jewish and English names. Moving clockwise towards the northern wall, is the first gate - The Damascus Gate, one of the most impressive Islamic works around. About 100m east is Herod´s Gate where the Crusaders broke down the city walls in July 1099. St Stephen´s Gate leads to the Mount of Olives; the Golden Gate is where, according to Christians, the Messiah will enter the city. The Dung Gate, is the smallest one and once was a rubbish dump! Parts of the Zion Gate had to be pulled down to give access to a Franciscan monastery that is within the city´s walls. The Jaffa Gate is important as marked the point of arrival for people travelling from the ancient port of Jaffa. Lastly, the New Gate (opened in 1887) eas built to give access from the pilgrim hospices to the Christian holy sites.

The Old City Gates: Jaffa Gate
Jaffa Gate is the main entrance to the Old City from Western Jerusalem. The gate was opened in the 19th century to make it possible for the German emperor to enter the city with his wagons. Inside, you find yourself next to the Citadel and at the entrance of the Christian quarter.

The Old City Gates: Damascus Gate
One of my favourite things to do in the Old City is just to sit on the step in front of Damascus Gate and watch the crowd. Don't go here if you want silence; this is a place where people make lots of noise. Mainly Arabs / Palestinians cen be seen here, but there are also many tourists, religious jews, and military. Underneath the surface there is always a tension which can come above very quickly. The gate itself has 3 names, an English name, an Arab name, and a Jewish name. The Arab name is Bab-El-Amud (Gate of the Pillar) . The jewish name is Shechem Gate. Damascus Gate is the most splendid of the gates in the 16th century walls of Jerusalem.
