One of the most impressive gates of the Old City and the only one on its western side. It got its name because Yaffa road starts here, the main street of Jerusalem, and that road led and still leads to port of Yaffa. A good starting point for exporing the Old City Quarters.

The Old City Gates: City Gates
The gates of the old city are hubs of activity, and being the entrances to the city have seen much of the city's amazing history. Some of the most famous gates are: Jaffa Gate In the Christian Quarter, facing out into New Jerusalem, this is named after the highway that leads to the city of Jaffa, and was built by Suleiman in 1538. It's one of the busiest, and widest gates in the city. Damascus Gate Sitting on the border of East and New Jerusalem, this very Arabic part of the city is thronged with people every day, who flock to its popular shops and markets. Zion Gate Entering from the south into the Armenian quarter, this gate was used by the Israeli army in 1967 to enter and capture the city. Golden Gate This gate is believed by Jews to be the one which the Messiah will enter the city by. Because of this Suleiman had the gate sealed to prevent this from happening. Dung Gate The curiously named Dung Gate got its name because... well because this is where they used to carry the rubbish out from the city.

The Old City Gates: Jerusalem - Old City Walls
The walls found today around Jerusalem's old city were built by the Turkish sultan Suleiman the "Magnificent" during the years 1536-1541. The length of the wall is around 3.8 km.

The Old City Gates: Zion Gate
This gate is situated next to the Jewish and the Armenian quarter. Outside the gate is the entrance to Mount Zion with its various christian, muslim and jewish holy sites. The gate is sometimes called the Wounded Gate because of the many bullet holes that are a results of the wars in 1948 and 1967. Between 1948 and 1967, this gate was actually the border between Jordania and Israel. Israelis were at that time not allewed to enter the Old City.

The Old City Gates: Damascus Gate
This is one of the more scenic gates leading in and out of the old city. This area is very busy and an informal market can often be found here. Once you enter the gate into the city, you will be in the narrow streets with many market stalls.

i think the damascus gate is the most fun of all the gates. it goes directly into the arab quarter and there is definitely alot of culture to soak up. there are often markets here with locals selling produce all the way down the stairs to the gate. good place to get cheap food, walk around, take pictures, etc. you will see some tourists but not as many as at other places around the old city.
