The Quarters: SYRIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND COVENANT OF ST MARK
Get off the Via Dolorosa, away from the Wailing Wall and the Temple Mount. Each Quarter of the Old City has its discoveries awaiting your exploration. One such is the Church and Convent of St Mark, built in the 12th century by the Syrian Orthodox. Several traditions are linked to the site: Last Supper, baptismal site for the Virgin Mary; the site where the Holy Spirit descended from at the Pentecost; the place where St Peter came following his angelic release from prison. The church is a wonderful place of repose and reflection, away from the often hectic ecstasy occurring just outside its walls. The ancient and enduring Christian tradition in the middle East are alive and well here. Significant Christian minorities existed within the Arab World ever since the 7th century conquest. Tradition has been as important for these communities as it has been for the Moslem and Judaic. Only in recent years, with the rise of nationalism, internationalism and ultra-orthodoxism, has the heart of these ancient Arab Christian communities been threatened, whether it is from Sadeem Hussein, the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism within Egypt or the Jewish social would-be (for some) theocracy of Israel. For a grand tour of the Arab Christian World (albeit, missing the important Nestorian and Assyrian communities - due to the fact he couldn’t travel there), read William Dalrymple’s fine ‘From the Holy Mountain; A Journey among the Christians of the Middle East’.

    The Quarters: The Armenian Quarter
Strolling from Jaffa gate area near the tower of David (The citadel) passing by the police station you'll get into the Armenian Quarter (which is the smallest one comparing the other parts of the old city) I have to say that it was a strange and nice feeling when strolling in thise alleyways... felt like i was in some different world (not only in the Armenian but while walking in the muslim and Jewish but mostly in the Armenian and Jewish quarter). The Armenian people says that they were in Jerusalem already from the 1st century and fought back then under the Roman emperor Titus.

The Armenian Quarter is the quiet quarter of the Old City, has a soft atmosphere with priests in black robes and grey beards moving along the dark, narrow and ancient streets. Crowded under the wall of the Tower of David, this area is worth to explore for its tiny churches, ancient buildings and hidden courtyards. The Jewish Quarter is bordered by the Armenian Quarter, the Western Wall and Hashalshelet Street. Today, the area is a peaceful oasis of smart shops, synagogues, street cafes and apartments, an ideal rest stop before dropping into the chaos of the Arab Quarter. The Arab Quarter is full of chaotic sights, sounds and smells. Two streets, Souq Khan ez-Zeit and El Wad are traditional market full of hand-made tiles, pottery, leather, carvings and antiques. Some stalls sell nuts and spices. Others sell food as well. This quarter is full of people and kids are everywhere. It is very different from the other quarters, more noisy. The Christian Quarter is sited towards the northwest corner of the walled city. Is surrounded by narrow but clean streets, and the best and most popular route is by following the Via Dolorosa – or the way of the Cross. Less spiritual is the commercialism that encompasses the area, with all souvenir shops.

    The Quarters: Armenian Quarter
The Armenian quarter is the smallest and least known quarter of Jerusalems Old City. Yet, the Armenian community was one of the first to settle in Jerusalem in the 4th Century. They have been there ever since that time. The quarter is kind of a monasteric compound between Jaffa Gate and Zion Gate; it is interesting to wander around though it doesnt offer the spectacular sights of the other quarters.

    The Quarters: Christian Quarter
The Christian quarter developed around the spot Christ was believed to be crusified and buried. It is nowadays the most touristic part of the Old City; The most important streets in this part of the Old Town: Christian Quarter Road and David Street have lots of small tourist shops. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is in the heart of the quarter. South of the Church there is a small area called Muristan; it is a pleasant area to drink a coffee. Long ago, Muristan used to be a hospitium for pilgrims.

    The Quarters: Jewish Quarter
The Jewish Quarter is one of the quietest parts of the Old Town. Jews used to live in this part of the town for a very long time. Before 1967, it was used as a refugee camp for Arabs. After 1967, the quarter was heavily renovated, but in a style that fits within the Old City. Besides, the historic Cardo street can be found here, an important trading street during the Roman times. Some archelogical remains can be seen close to Jewish Quarter Road.

    The Quarters: Muslim Quarter
The densest populated quarter of the Old City, accounting for more than 50% of the population who live in the Old City. It's a warren of alleyways (covered or exposed) and, as you move away from the tourist tack of the Via Dolorosa and immediate surrounds, a surprising amount of 'normal' shops assail you - butchers, clothing, bakers, sweet and spice stalls etc. Damascus and the less used Sy Stephen's (also known as Lion's) gates are the main access/egress points for this section. Damascus gate epitomises the melee of the quarter, with thousands of people leaving and entering the city throughout the day. There are some stunning examples of Mamluk architecture (13-16th centuries) here - but it's difficult to get the full 'picture' in such an enclosed space. There are a number of Christian sites within this quarter, with Via Dolorosa intersecting the quarter and leading down to St Stephen's Gate - as area that is consierably more spacious that its Damascus counterpart. Many of the narrow streets are grafitti'ed in the green of Hamas.

    The Quarters: Muslim Quarter
The muslim quarter is the most densely populated and the most lively quarter in the Old Town. There are many soukhs and bazaars, you can easily lose your way there. The main road is Al-Wad Road (Valley Street), heading from Damascus Gate towards the Western Wall Plaza. Another important street is the Via Dolorosa, heading from the Lions (St Stephans) Gate towards the Christian Quarter. Part of the Via Dolorosa is on Al-Wad Road. There are some interesting old buildings in the muslim quarter (for example in Al Takiyah Street), but the main thing to sea and experience here are the people and the soukhs.

    The Quarters: The Jewish Quarter
This is where most of the Jews in the Old City live. It's filled with stone buildings and narrow alleyways (as is the rest of the Old City), with many synagogues, yeshivas, and Judaica/antiques shops. The architecture is beautiful--a mix of old and new, all in Jerusalem stone.
