The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): The Plaza and Wailing Wall

See the Wailing Wall in the Old City, enter through Dung Gate. Pass through the security and metal detectors - get ready to take EVERYTHING out of your pockets. Cement barriers separate the worshippers from the plaza, where prayer requests are written on tiny peices of paper then folded up and lodged between wall stones. Above is The Temple Mount or Dome of the Rock that houses the rock that Abraham was going to sacrifice Issac on and to the South is the Al Aqsa Mosque. To left is the entrance for The Underground Tunnel Tour.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): Western Wall
So why is it called the Western or Wailing Wall? It is actually part of the original western wall of the Temple Mount dating from the 70 A.D. It got the name of the Wailing Wall as it was often a centre for mourning of the destruction of the Temple Mount and the exile of the Jewish people.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): A Solemn moment
Standing in front of the west wall you can see just the top of the Dome. When I was at the wall it was pretty busy with tourists, locals, and Rabbis. A parade was being practiced for as well. There is a section where you can approach the wall and there are people nearby to tell how to do it properly.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): The Western Wall
The Western Wall, The Wailing Wall, or the Kotel. Whatever you may call it, this structure is the holiest spot in Judaism. This wall is what remains of the Second Jewish Temple. Its holiness come from its proximity to the holy of holies inside of the Temple. The Western Wall still attracts Jews from around the world who come and pray, believing that their prayers get special attention from this spot. They bring notes with their prayers and wishes and leave them in the cracks of the Western Wall. Their is even a service online where you can email your prayers and somebody will place the email inside of the wall for you! At the wall there are two sides. The one side, on the left, is for men to pray. The othe side, the right, is for women. This keeps with Jewish law where the sexes pray seperate from one another. Just above the wall, one can see the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site for Islam. This area is a major point in the current conflict. For this reason, security is very tight.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): Walling Wall
The only remaining piece if the Jewish temple. There where small paper notes pushed into the wall. The guide explained that it where from the old times when the Jews only could visit the wall once a week. They would write prayers on a paper an put it between the stones to last the whole week!

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): Bar Mitzvah by The Wall
There was a boy by the wall performing his Bar Mitzvah (Acceptance into adulthood) and his concentration and nervousness of making it in this sacred place where quite fascinating.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): Prayer halls at the Western Wall
This is the only enclosed and covered prayer area at the Western Wall. Torah scrolls are kept here. You can also see deep down to the old constructions of the Wall.

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): West Wall (Wailing Wall)
This is the only remaining portion of the original temple structure built in 515 BCE and enlarged by King Herod in the 1st Century BCE. The original temple built by King Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians in the 6th Century BC. The second temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. Today, the Western Wall is venerated by Jews and its used as a great outdoor temple. Jews from all over the world come here to pray and to place small prayers written on paper into cracks in the wall. This view is the Exterior side showing the masonary (stone work) used in the construction. For more on the West Wall and another view, please see my main Israel Page

The Wailing Wall (Western Wall): The Western Wall (Kotel)
This is the western retaining wall of the Temple Mount, where the Biblical Jewish temples stood. It is the most important religious site for Jews, aside from the Temple Mount itself. Jews from around the world and from all streams of Judaism can be found here. The Sabbath (Shabbat) is a particularly good time to visit.
