Old City Jerusalem Streets: Observe the Shabbat in Mea-Shearim!

Motorists are not allowed to drive on Shabbat through the streets of the ultra-orthodox neighborhoods such as Mea-Shearim. Any desecration of the jewish Shabbat might be met with shouting and in some cases even violence such as stoning.

The dress code inside the ultra-orthodox jewish neighborhoods such as Mea-Shearim is strictly observed. Men should cover their heads, as well as married women. Women should wear long skirts and long sleeves blouses. Anyways, at the entrance of all ultra-orthodox neighborhoods you will be warned not to enter in immodest dress. Any transgression in dress and behavior may be met with shouting. If this occurs, you should better leave the quarter at once. Any escalation could lead to violence.

Everything owned or operated by jews in Jerusalem closes at sundown on Friday and doesn't open again until Saturday after sundown, as this is the Jewish day of rest (Shabbat). Even the buses stop running as well as the sheruts from the airport so make sure you are settled in during this time as transportation, shopping, and dining are at a minimum.

I bought two scarves in the old city. The vendor put them in a black plastic bag -- so I thought. Fortunately I checked the bag and it was stuffed with old rags. I made such a fuss that he was afraid the cops would come. He gave me the scarves and half my money back

    100 gates - Me'a She'arim
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a neighborhood in Jerusalem called Me'a She'arim (100 gates in english). The residents of this neighborhood are ultra orthodox jews. If you will enter this neighborhood try to wear long clothes (or not too short) , don't take their pictures because most of them don't like it and you don't know how they will react and if you want to visit on friday or saturday you should know that you cannot enter with a vehicle only by foot , because it is forbidden.

    Soldiers all around
  • Tip Rating:
  • Because Jerusalem is holy place and very sensitive because of the Jewish-Arabic situation you will see a lot of Israeli soldiers around the important places. Don't be afraid but still , don't behave in a strange way. Those soldiers are friendly and i am sure that if you will be nice and polite they will laugh with you or talk to you.

Because of the Jewish-Arabic conflict there are a lot of security all over the city , not just holy places but also restaurants , the mall and places like that. You will find a guard that will check your bag or use metal detector so don't be nervous , just let him do his work and enter the place. The procedure is because the arabs sent a lot of people to explode themselves in public areas with Jews or to stab people with a knife.

A mistake I made was to walk across the room to tell my touring partners farewell at the Ben Gurion airport -- thus, I left my bags unattended. When I saw two guards head for my bags, I ran to claim them. Our tour guide grabbed the bags from me and placed them in a cart and said, "DON'T LEAVE YOUR BAGS UNATTENDED OR THEY WILL BLOW THEM UP". Oops - didn't do that again.

I had left my group and was by myself when it was time to head back to the US. Before I could check my luggage they were placed on a table by the guards and I was interrogated for half an hour about where my suitcase had been and who I had been with and where I had been. The guards were so young it was difficult to for me to take them seriously, but I understood they did need to know who I was and if someone had put something in my bag without my knowing. They were very courteous and I didn't feel threatened. Just be prepared to face the same situation if you travel there.

    The Jerusalem Syndrome
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its a medically recognised illness! Overwhelmed by the proximity of the Christian and Biblical references, approx 200 people per year suffer from Jerusalem Syndrome! In a nutshell, they believe they are a biblical character (Jesus is the favourite, but the Virgin Mary and Samson have been known to traipse the streets). It is more common among men and tend to be between the ages of 20-35 (and usually from a strong religious background). Luckily it tends to be temporary! Usual treatment is to leave the country.....Israel was on high alert for the year 2000 and the feared (many) 2nd (or in Jewish terms, the 1st) coming of the Saviour. It never materialised.
