Transportation: Buses and taxis to Jerusalem
  • Tip Rating:
  • When visiting Jerusalem, you will surely be approached by numerous taxi drivers offering to drive you to Bethlehem. One driver pulled over on a busy street to solicit us. After we said no, he backed up and kept making offers to us for about 50 meters.

If you do hire a driver to take you to Bethlehem, make sure that he is not going to smuggle anything into or out of the Palestinian territory. Drivers figure that they will have less scrutiny at the security check-point if they are transporting tourists. They can also pass the blame onto you, saying that the contraband is yours.

Old City Jerusalem Streets: Limited Parking in Old Walled City
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only drawback if you're staying in the Old Walled City and you've driven there in your rental car, is finding a place to park. Parking is at an all time prime here, and space is really limited. The streets are narrow and parking is difficult if next to impossible; I found that the best place to park is if you enter either through Jaffa Gate or Zion Gate and take a right down the Armenian Patriarchate Road, following it as it curves along the perimeter wall toward the Jewish Quarter (not too far a drive inside). Close to the Western Wall you'll find a fairly large parking lot. It gets pretty full there but it's by far your best and safest bet for parking, especially if it's going to be overnight. We even left a suitcase in the trunk of our car for several days and it was fine. We also found the cost to be reasonable, considering the location: around $10 a day. We made a deal to pay for 3 nights in advance, and it worked out beautifully for us.

    The woman soldiers of course...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, I guess there are many subjects that can be written about safety in Jerusalem, but I am not the right person to tell you about it, my self, I never had any problems in Jerusalem, in the west side, east side or the old city. The only problems my Finnish friend has was with the women soldiers of course, they are so beautiful that he was in shocked and did not knew with whom to speak first.

Jerusalem is a holy city for the 3 religions - Judaism , Christianity and Islam.
There are a lot of holy places for those religions so try to respect the place - wear clothes that are not too short , be quiet in those places.

Pickpockets: At the time (and we're talking...

  • At the time (and we're talking 1998 here), I didn't find Jerusalem particularly dangerous, although I was there in a relatively quiet time and things have obviously changed. The mixture of nationalities and religions here is much more diverse than it is in, say, Tel Aviv - to me the Old City appeared less vulnerable to attacks anyway...

One thing is to watch your belongings, especially in the Old Town, as pickpockets are everywhere.

Old City Jerusalem Streets: Confusing Jerusalem Streets

The streets in Jerusalem's Old City can be very confusing. They are very narrow and many look the same. Even with a map one can easily get lost. Walking around can be very interesting because of the monuments, shops, and restaurants. Just keep in mind the one wrong turn and you could end up in East Jerusalem. This area is equally interesting but it is the Arab section and may make some Jews or Christians uncomfortable especially with the current security situation.

Old City Jerusalem Streets: Male Hookers
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are alot of warnings out there about unaccompanied women, but men should take precautions too. Against my better judgement, I started talking to a pushy souvenier store owner, who asked me questions like, "Are you travelling alone?" and "Do you have a girlfriend?" I thought he was just trying to sell me stuff, so I told him I didn't. Soon, however, he stopped trying to sell me stuff and started coming on to me. (Believe me, I know the difference between "You don't have to buy anything, just look" and "I would like you to enjoy my hospitality. [Crotch Grab]") I quickly left the store and went on my way. I was later told he was a male hooker, which was dissapointing in its own way.

    Israel and the Palestinians...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Israel and the Palestinians will likely not see the billions in tourism revenue they had expected as violence plagues the Holy Land in what should have been a banner year — the 2000th anniversary of Jesus’ birth was suppose to kick the tourism to top levels, but the hotels are nearly empty and flights out of the country is full. This picture was taken in June 2000 before the riots started and pilgrims where going wild visiting the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Entering Israel with a Syrian stamp
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have a Syrian stamp in your passport, you will likely be under greater scrutiny when entering Israel. Relations between the two countries are hostile as Israel has occupied Syria's portion of the Golan Heights since 1967.

As an American who visited Syria, I was detained in a room and questioned for about 30 minutes. (If they did this to me, they will certainly no hesitate to do it to someone of a different nationality.) The Israelis find it hard to believe that someone would actually visit Syria as a bona fide tourist. They asked me where I live, my occupation and all sorts of other questions. I think they even called my work to verify the number I gave them.

If you have nothing to hide, do not panic. Just prepare your information (room reservations, itinerary, etc.) ahead of time. If you have any inconsistencies in your story they will give you problems. If you think you are being unfairly treated, request to speak with someone from your embassy.
