Keep an eye open for Amicta Zelleri

by Martin_S.

Yes you heard correct, Amicta Zelleri, that little bundle of twigs you see in the first picture...at first it looks exactly like that, a bundle of twigs, even if look like they are pretty organized. But then all of a sudden you see a small head peak out and then part of the body with legs and it begins to MOVE...if you spot one of these small critters, snap a picture, I have lived here for a long time and only seen a few.

Israeli Dinosaur

by Martin_S.

This is the only dinosaur find I know of in Israel. It is in the valley of Oron, just south east of Arad. The entire valley is used by a refining factory and is constanly being dug up, sifted, sorted and then spit back in a new place. During one of the digging operations they came across this dinosaur skull. I am not sure of the type, maybe someone could identify it for me.

Masada

by konejos

Following the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in about 70 AD a number of Jewish rebels fled to this mountain fortress. Masada was self-sustaining. It had supplies of food and water and even had a Roman Bath along with one of Herod's palaces. After a long siege it eventually fell to the Romans. Fearing retribution, most of the inhabitants and their families committed suicide. A rally cry of Jewish soldiers today is, "Masada shall not fall again."

The Amphitheater In Caesarea

by Paul2001

The amphitheater in Caesarea comes a disappointment if you have already see the superbly restored Roman theater nearby. Only the eastern and rounded southern side are well preserved. Her you can see the tiers of seats which at onetime accommodated 15,000 spectators. The amphitheater would have been used for horse racing and chariot racing. Like much of Caesarea parts of the amphitheater has been destroyed by the sea. The amphitheatre sits close to the sea between the Crusader ruins and the theater.

The Theater at Caesarea

by Paul2001

One of the highlights to a visit to Caesarea is the superb theater. This is one of the largest in Israel. The theater dates from the 1st century A.D., in fact there is a replica of a plaque (the original is in the Israel Museum) at the entrance that refers to Tiberius and Pontius Pilate. The latter name is the only historical reference to the Roman governer of Israel at the time of Christ. If the theatre has a flaw, it is so over restored to the extent that it looks more like a recreation rather than an original Roman theatre. The theater now host various productions today.

The Wall

by vdoortje

In Holland we have a saying:"Beter een goede BUUR dan een verre vriend" (Better to have a good neighbor than a far friend)In one of our newspapers there was in item about the wall Israel is building between Israel territory and Palestinian inhabited places. They changed the saying in:"Beter een goede MUUR dan een verre vriend" (Better to have a good wall than a far friend)Meaning that the relationship between the state of Israel and the Palestinian people that were captured by it in 1948 is less than friendly, to say the least. The hostilities are well exploited in the tabloids. Not always that neutral. To the East of Jerusalem you can see the wall that was build to secure the "safety" of Israel. I think Israel will only be safe when they will accept that the Palestinian people have just as much right to the soil and are just as much inhabitants of the country of Israel, with all the...

Those brown signs!

by Footstep

If you are travelling in Israel, look out for the road signs that are coloured brown. They mean a place of interest! Could be a famous place like Massada or Megiddo, but could also be a local goat-farm, cactus farm, or tiny boutique winery.Take a chance - go and visit! Who would have thought that the site of the beginning of the old water pipe-line to Jerusalem would be turned into such a beautiful place?Found off road 411 between Mazkeret Batya and Kibbutz Hulda

Take the time to look around!

by Footstep

When you are touring Israel don't be in such a hurry to arrive that you forget to look about you on the way! Here for example by the side of a country road is a vineyard where at the end of each row of grape-vines a beautiful rose bush has been planted !Why? The vine is susceptible to a particular disease. The rose is even more susceptible so the vintner can check the bush for early signs of disease and so act to prevent the vine being infected.Well of course he could just use a preventative spray on the vine - but this way unnecessary chemicals are avoided. That's why Israeli wine is so good!L'chaim!

Baniyas Stream and Waterfall

by Bregman

The Baniyas is a popular place, mainly beacuase of the waterfall which is only a 2 minutes walk from the entrance. If you want to see some more, you can go in by the other gate and hike along the stream. Its' quite an easy hike and there are some sites along the way.Near the second entrance (the one closer to the Golan heights), there are the ruins of a Greek temple. This place was dedicated to the god Pan. It was called Paniyas in Hebrew 2000 years ago. As the Arabs cannot pronounce "p" the name was distorted to Baniyas.
