The hexagon Pool

by Sharon

Fantastic little Nature wonder !A short hiking (aprx 20 min') from the entrance to the Yahudiya nature Preserve willlead you to a pool of hundreds of hexagonal rock columns which were caused by the rapid cooling of molten rock, which skirt the water's edge. The pool is fantastic and great to swim in during summer... (although we saw some travelers whom were about to swim there just as we left !! and it was only 18c brrrr !!) Another 40min' hiking will lead you to the Yehudiya Stream and waterfalls.Thats a definite Off the beathen path but if you're here for a long time then its worth a visit.Few min' drive from Katzrin (in the Golan Area.

The Theatre at Beit Shean

by Paul2001

The theatre at Beit Shean is one of the most impressive in Israel. During its heyday during the 2nd century C.E., it would have sat over 7,000 people. The theatre was excavated in 1996, shortly before my visit. I preferred this theatre to the more famous one in Caesarea which is over restoreed.

The Baha'i Shrine and Gardens in Haifa

by Paul2001

Haifa has few in the way of must see attractions but one of the most impressive is the stunning Baha'i Shrine and Gardens. Haifa is the headquarters of the Baha'i faith and this Shrine is one of their most holy sites. The Shrine is marked by the beautifully domed Shrine where one of the most important figures in Baha'i history, the martyred Bab, has been entombed. The interior of the tomb is impressively decorated with gold leaf and flowers. All the more remarkable are the surrounding gardens which were only partially complete when I visited in 1996. The gardens are now referred to as "the Hanging Gardens" for the way that they flow down the terraced landscape on the slopes of Mount Carmel. To visit the shrine, you have to go between 9am to noon. Dress modestly for this is a religious site. It is free to enter the Shrine and Gardens. The Gardens are open all day.

Mamshit National Park

by Bregman

One of the Nabatean cities which can be found in the Negev desert, together with Shivta and Avdat. The city was called Memphis in the Nabatean period and while it's smaller than the other cities, it offers more restored houses. Like other Nabatean cities it sat on a road used for tradings in the pre-Roman world. After the Roman occupation the Nabateans had to find a new way to make a living, so they started breding Arabian horses.Directions: Mamshit is on Route 25 (Beersheva-Dimona) about 8 kilometers from Dimona in the direction of Rotem junction.See more in the travelogue and in the official Mamshit National Park web site.

Nachal Daliyot (Majrase)

by Bregman

Hiking in Israel during the summer is not that easy. Most places are too hot for real hikes. So, most Israelis will look for places with water for the summer. One of the best places is the nothern-east corner of the Kinneret. There are two streams flowing into the lake in that area, Nachal Daliyot and Nachal Meshushim. These streams do all the way from the Golan heights to the lake. This is the perfect hike for summer. It's quite an easy walk, there are plenty of trees and shade and most of the walk is in the water. In some parts some swimming is required.

Majd Al Shams

by Sharon

This Druz Village is located in the northern point of Israel at the eastern side. Majd al Shams used to be a Syrian village until the war of 1967 when all the Golan Heights area was conqured by Israel. Many of the people in Majd al Shams still have relatives in Syria and since there's no way to keep in contact (except for the internet this days and that is if its possible there...) there's the shouting hill... where people from both sides of the border comes to see each other and the only way of hearing each other is shouting.... and therefore its name ...For all of you who wants to get some sort of clue about it look for the Israeli movie " The Syrian Bride". Do NOT TOUCH IT ! When we arrived to Majdal Shams we went to see the shouting hill where relatives talks to each other from both sides of the border by shouting. We sneaked through one of the locked gates that was possible to go...

Manara Cliffs

by Sharon

Manara cliffs which is in Kibbutz Manara is located in the north of Israel just near Qiryat Shmona. The main thing in the site is the cable car that goes from the top of the cliff down and back. The views are beautiful as you can see Mount Hermon and all its area as well as the grean / brown fields and fish pools etc' with all of its Shaps (see my not so clear photo). The important thing is to arrive in day of good visability (better after rainy days) and always better relatively early and not in the afternoon and evening although sometimes you do get a good visability during this hours as well.Except for the park there's a lot of other sport activities that are held there and its a great places to take kids to visit if you have a lot of time in the north, if not then skip this site, i would Not say its a must.Admission fee isn't cheap and i correctly remember it was aprx 40 or maybe 45...

Golan Heights Winery

by Bregman

One of the bests, if not the best, winery in Israel. Nowadays, there are dozens little wineries everywhere in Irael, producing some great wines. But in 1983, when this winery was founded, the situation was quite different. There was virtually no wine culture in Israel. The Golan Heights Winery started making excellent wines, causing the older wineries to improve their wines too and started a wine culture from nothing. Here you can visit the winery, taste the wines and, of course, buy some in the local shop.Opening Hours: Sun-Thu: 8:30-17:00 (18:30 in July-August) Fri: 8:30-13:30

The Israeli Air Force Museum

by Bregman

If you are an airplane fan, or you travel with kids around Beer-Sheba, this is the place for you. Here you can find dozens of airplanes and helicopters used by the Israeli air force since 1948. There are also some airplanes used by the Arab air forces, like a MIG-21 flown here by a Syrian defector pilot.Shown here is the Ace of Aces. This Mirage plane shot down 13 enemy planes. It was sold to the Argentinian airforce but they agreed to give it up for the sake of the museum. The museum is open Sun-Thu between 8:00-17:00 and Fri 8:00-13:00. There are guides tours in Hebrew, English, French and more.See more in the travelogue.Directions: Follow the signs from Beer-Sheba. The museum is a little after the entrance to Qibbutz Hazerim.

Mount Meiron Nature Reserve

by Bregman

Mount Meiron is the highest in Israel (not considering Mount Hermon). It is 1208 metres high. The entire area is one the most beautiful nature reserves in Israel. Just look at the picture...Apart from the views, the area is full with ancient graves. A lot of people come to these graves believing they have mystical powers. The most famous ritual is the pilgrimage to the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in the fest of Lag Ba'Ommer.
