Rental car from Eilat to Petra
Many people ask if they can rent a car in Israel, drive to Eilat and then across the border to visit Jordan. Some ask is it safe...
Safe in what sense?
The road is long and tiring, there are many accidents.
Security wise? No problems at all.
You may **not** take a rental car across the border.
The insurance companies don't permit it.
The bus from Jerusalem/Tel Aviv to Eilat is large and comfortable.
There are two rest breaks. From Eilat to the border crossing is a short ride.
Cross the border on foot and take a bus or taxi from Aqaba to Petra.

Motor Scooters in Eilat!
A fun way to get around Eilat is via motor scooter - it's a fairly inexpensive alternative to car rental and or taxi service. According to an excellent "local source", these scooters are referred to as "tus tus" in Israel.
I felt very safe driving around on my motor scooter while in the resort area of Eilat. We even drove as far as the border of Egypt (pretty close by).
There's usually a small storage compartment where you can bring along water, small snacks and even your camera. It's perfect for a nice drive along the coast.
You'll find the scooter rentals all over the place. Prices are competitive.
If you are renting a car and want to drive to Eilat there are 2 ways to come :
The first route is from The Arava road and the second one is from Mitzpe Ramon.
The Arava road is better than Mitzpe Ramon but less scenic , although you can pass the dead sea on your way.
Another thing is that the Arava road is less curvy so a lot of trucks and "Speedy Gonzales" drivers pass here , so Mitzpe Ramon will be a little bit safer for you.
If you will drive from Mitzpe Ramon you will pass Ramon crater and other beautiful landscapes.
While in Eilat you can use your car to go to far attractions like the Underwater observatory or Timna Park and if you are only resting most of the hotels will certainty offer you a parking place for your car.

If you don't want to fly and have a few hours and want to see the view of the desert you can take a bus from the central station of Tel Aviv.
The ride will cost you 65 nis and it will take something like 5 hours by en Egged bus
How to get to Eilat by bus
I came to Eilat from Tel-Aviv by bus. It took us about 6 hours to overcome 350 km with a short stop in Ein Boqeq on the Dead Sea. But the ride was rather interesting because I could see the Central and the South districts of Israel out of a bus window. I don’t know how much it cost because the transfer was included in the price of my tour.
We used “Boris Tours” as a transfer company.

I finished my trip along Israel in Ovda after I spent three nights in Eilat. It takes only 40 minutes to get to the airport Ovda from Eilat 57 km by bus or by car along the Route #12.
This is the area of the Eilat Mountains Nature Reserve which is very picturesque.
You can watch my 3 min 39 sec HD Video En Boqeq - Eilat out of my Youtube channel.
You can watch my 4 min 11 sec HD Video Israel Eilat-Uvda road .
The easiest way is to fly to Eilat. Be aware that there are two airports, the city airport just by the city centre (code: ETH) and the international Ovda airport about 70 km away (code: VDA) Because of the city airport short runway heavy load of fuel airlines that needed to fly to Europe uses the Ovda airport which was actually built as IAF base but they added a terminal for commercial flights there soon afterwards when they realize the tourism potential of it.
Currently the Ovda airport serve charter flights from the following countries: UK, France, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine & Russia.
Walking around the city
While most of the attractions in Eilat are located on the beach , the best way t oenjoy the city is by walking.
The promenade is very beautiful and you will see the beautiful water and lovely hotels and restaurants.
There are a few places that you should take a car/taxi but those places are not too much (Timna Park , Underwater Observatory)

Rent a car
If you are into driving into the desert, want to visit the Timna park, the Hai-Bar and other desert adventures you should rent a car. I was checking few companies which none is cheap, but the better deal and the good and quick service I got from Shlomo, which is also Sixt agent in Israel. I got nice Mitsubishi with air conditions of course and enjoyed my ride into the desert.
Like in any coast line city also Eilat has it share of boat cruises for tourist sight seeing. Not my kind of and in many of them when they pass near use it looks to me very messy and noisy, so I am not sure how can anyone enjoy it, but some are with glass floor to enable you watch the sea life under it.
Bus to Taba Border
There is an hourly bus (number 15) to the Taba Border from Eilat Bus Station. This bus leaves on the hour, every hour from 9am. The cost is 5.70shekels and the journey takes just over 20 minutes. The return journey from the Taba Border leaves at approx 20 minutes after every hour.
Please note that on the Shabbat there are much fewer services per day.
Bus Eilat to Jerusalem
There is a long distance Egged bus every day Sun-Thu at 07:00, 10:00, 14:15 and 17:00 to Jerusalem (number 444). It costs 65 shekels one way. It takes approx 4 hours, with one rest stop en-route. On Fridays, the bus goes at 07:00, 10:00 & 13:00, and on the Shabbat at 16:30 and 19:30.
Often two or three buses leave at the same time on this route. It is worth booking this route in advance as the time that I used it the bus was completely full. There was a group of about 10 people that had to wait for the next bus.
Oh yeah, like in the rest of the world (at list it seems so) also here that Segway arrived and you can see it somewhere around the promenade. Not that it is really useful for such a small town, but it can be just for the fun of it.
Bus Eilat to Tel Aviv
There is a bus (number 393/394) from Eilat to Tel Aviv approx every 1.5 hours from 5am. The journey takes about 5 hours and costs about 70shekels one way. Again there are reduced journeys on Friday and Saturday.
Flying to Eilat
We arrived by car, but I was surprised to see Eilats airport located right in the center of town. Its served by internal Israelli airlines and charters from Europe.
Fly your own jet
At Eilat local small airport I could spot few private airplanes and even helicopter. So if you happened to have one, that can be also an easy way to drop to Eilat for a sunny weekend :)
