Like the small cave the large cave was built during the 5th and 6th century, the Byzantine Periode. It was used as cistern for a farm house that stood close by.
During the history, especially during the 20th century, the cave was used with many different purposes. Turkish forces and the army of General Allenby used the cave during the First Worldwar. Then Beduins lived in it
With the arrival of the first jewish settlers the cave became their first home for half a year before moving into the freshly built fort. During the War of Independence the cave was fortified and soon a field hospital was set up in it. Visiting the cave you willl see much of the tooling used by the people working in the field hospital and during the time people took shelter here.

The small cave was dug in the fifth and sixth century as a reservoir and storage for food. Because of a landslide it was hidden until found when the settlers started to dig a shelter in 1948.
During the Independence War the cave was formed into a command bunker and was the head quarter of the army for some time.

The Guards, or 'Jewish Settlement Police', were established in 1936 to protect the Jewish Community in the settlements in Palestine. They coworked with the British Army and Police, wore uniforms and swore to the King of England. Each guard station was under supervision of a British Officer.
In Revivim at first the guard station was placed in a cave, now below the main buildings, then moved into the room now shown as guard room in the museum.

An excellent overview over the area of the kibbutz and the surrounding landscape you will have from the top of the watch tower, which is the top of the central building of the kibbutz. There is a ladder, resp. stairs, going up and I recommend to climb up there.

The life in the early kibbutz was not very easy. On one side the kibbutz was placed in the desert then it was in the middle of the Independence War of Israel, with attacs of the egyptian army. In the kibbutz you will find rooms with tools necessary for daily life. Here people worked and slept.

Weather Station

Weather Station, Kibbutz Revivim, IL

The weather station, which is now part of the Museum Kibbutz Revivim, was a very important item for the first pioneering settlers that started to settle in the Negev Desert. The settlement here in Revivim was one of the very first that were established in the desert (1943). Therefore people had not much knowledge how to change the desert environment into farmland. It was important to know more about the climate, so this weather station was set up to do research. People took data three times a day, at 8 AM, 2PM and 8 PM, and sent it to the Meteorological Department of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
