Sede Boqer Things to Do

  • Terrarium: Get to know the Negev snakes!

In the Sde Boker Field School there is a collection of desert animals, mainly reptiles. Our visit there constituted the evening cultural program in the Field School. We heard an introductory lecture from a local herpetologist, and then went around the glass cages and had a close look at the various snakes. It's not everyone's cup of tea (or of...

  • Ein Avdat

This is one of my favorite spots in the Negev. A canyon, a spring, a natural pool reflecting the beautifully layered limestone walls, greenery in the middle of the desert, and if you're lucky you can see the ibexes coming down the cliffs for a drink of water. There is a paved road leading to the entrance of the nature reserve and a car park. From...

  • Ben Gurion's Home at Sde Boker

Ben Gurion was one of the men essential in the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. I think that if you could label him the "Father of the Country" you would not be far wrong. He along with a few outstanding others were and ARE still thought of as the founders. When Ben Gurion was in political office, he constantly paraded the Negev Desert...

  • The Ben Gurion Promenade

Walk along this promenade, on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Tzin Canyon, and be inspired like Ben Gurion by the magnificent views of the canyon; hear the call of the desert; breathe the clear, dry desert air; feel the wind.If you are lucky you will also see a family of mountain goats with their impressive curved horns, climbing the rocks...

  • Ben Gurion's Tomb

David Ben Gurion died on December 1st, 1973, at the age of 87. His wife Paula had died five years earlier.Several prime ministers of Israel were buried on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem. Ben Gurion chose otherwise. Ben Gurion himself pointed to the site where he wanted to be buried: In Sede Boqer, on the edge of the cliff overlooking the vast Tzin Canyon....

  • Ben Gurion's Hut

Ben Gurion was the legendary first prime minister of the State of Israel, who played a pivotal role in its creation. When he resigned from office for the first time, in 1953, he declared he would make the young kibbutz of Sede Boqer his home. And so he did. Kibbutz members even had to vote whether to accept him as a member!Visiting Ben Gurion's...

  • "The Ben-Gurion Walk"

A great time to visit Sede Boqer is on the weekend in November when the Ben Gurion Walk takes place. This is a popular sports event held every year in memory of David Ben Gurion, Israel's legendary first prime minister who made Sede Boqer his home, and whose name symbolizes the vision of the development of the Negev desert.Whole families arrive for...

  • Enjoy the wine at Sde Boker Winery

Special, yes the wine is special and the person making it also, if you have time to talk, ask Zvi about his wine you will not go wrong. I suggest trying the Zinfandel it was excellent and one I love. His wines are a little more expensive than the average, but well worth the extra because you do GET EXTRA.

  • Visit the Sde Boker Winery

We visited the Sde Boker Winery, to taste some local brew. As it turns out the vinter is a fellow Californian, Zvi Remek, and he has produced some excellent blends. The one we favored this time was his Zinfandel.Zvi produces the wine on his own, he works the fields, crushes the grapes, puts it in oaken barrels and bottles it, from start to...

Sede Boqer Restaurants

  • Desrt wine and Desert Fish

Around Sde Boker there are several private ranches, each with its own distinct character, which provide good home-made food in a special setting. The Nachal Boker ranch was built from scratch by Moshe and Hilda, it has its own vineyard and a restaurant in a quaint barrel-like house made of wood and mud, with a cylindrical ceiling. We had a very...

  • Homemade goat cheese at Havat Naot

One of several independent makers of goat cheese here in the southern desert area between BeerSheva and Eilat. Their cheese is excellent and I would suggest trying 1) Tzfatit with onion2) Tom3) Camembert (old)All were excellent, so we took and had a cheese, bread and wine picnic in the middle of the desert overlooking Nahal Tzin.

  • Desert wine at Havat Karmi Avdat

Here at Havat Karmi Avdat they grow their own grapes, the grapes are harvested and then contracted to a big company to process and make a special label carrying the Havat Karmi Avdat lable.Sorry there is not a picture, just after we took at trip there our house was broken into and the camera along with 2 months of photos on several memory cards...

    Geofun Desert Cycling Center

by iblatt Written Nov 30, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The plateau of Ramat-Ha-Negev, where Sede-Boqer is located, really invites cycling.
It's a good way to be close to nature, feel part of the desert, and yet cover some distance in the open spaces of the Negev.

In "Geofun" Desert Cycling you can rent bicycles, or take part in a guided bicycle tour in the Sede Boqer area, in the Ramon Crater (amazing geological structure further south from Sede Boqer) or even in the Judean Desert (to the east, above the Dead Sea).

Their office is located in Kibbutz Sede Boqer, right next to Ben Gurion's Hut.

  • Visit Ben Gurion's Grave

The first photo shows Polona, Igor and Marko whom we took to visit Ben Gurion's grave at Sede Boker. The second photo shows Daria and Zohara at the gravesite entrance.Ben Gurion was the first elected president of Israel and is regarded as one of the most important figures in the founding of the state of Israel. During his lifetime he was considered...

  • Entrance to Nahal Tzin

Sede Boker also stands at the entrance to one of the largest valleys in Israel, the Nahal Tzin valley, you can see in the picture the beginning. You can see the "snake" of green which shows clearly where the rains are funneled in this valley. Also from here you have access to the Ein Avdat nature preserve.
