Lot's wife, a pillar of salt, Sdom, Israel

Lot's wife is a figure from the book of Genesis known for being turned into a pillar of salt as punishment for looking back upon the burning destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah even after being warned NOT to look back....hard to do when you are being expelled from your home forever...anyway here she is in all her hard rock splendor...and by the way it actually IS SALT.
The small tiny mountain range bordering the southern part of the Dead Sea, called the Sodom Mountains are made up primarily of SALT. The Malham Cave, also found there is the longest natural salt cave in the world.

Each year in the winter (because can you imagine how hot it is in the Dead Sea in summer, spring or fall at the lowest point on earth), there is a mountain bike race...The racers take a course running through, down, up and over dry riverbeds and through salt canyons to take first place. In 2004 they also brought in some exhibition riders to show us slowpokes how to "jump" a bike. The last picture shows some downhilling they did after the show was over.

Ratna visits Sdom and Dead Sea

Ratna came to visit Israel from Indonesia, and we could not miss the opportunity to meet her in person, so we met her at her hotel at the Dead Sea. Up until a short time ago Indonesia would not let its nationals even visit Israel, even today it is impossible for an Indonesian to visit Israel as a single individual, they can only come on a organized tour. In Israel there are NO restrictions for Indonesians visiting Israel. We hope that one day soon the restrictions put in place by the Indonesian government will be relaxed so they can visit us freely and we can in turn visit their country.
