Maale Yair path, Dead Sea, Israel by Martin_S. Here you can see the "path" leading up from the Dead Sea to Maale Yair. You can also arrive from Arad, there is a good path (for 4 wheel drive) that goes almost directly to this observation point. The other access point is from Tsok Tamroor just off the road from Arad-Dead Sea, the drive is about 10 kilometers on a dirt path, the sign says Massada 4X4.... Leave a Comment

View of Dead Sea from Maale Yair, Israel by Martin_S. In the picture, again from Maale Yair, you can see the portion of the Dead Sea known as the Lashon, or tounge. This is where the Dead Sea is divided into the northern and southern parts. The northern part is very deep (around 200-300 meters), while the southern section is only 2-15. You can see an artificial canal built to bring water in from the northern section to the southern section. If not for this canal the southern section would be dry by now with only the mineral deposits there to remind us that there was water at one time. Leave a Comment

Tzharon Katan, Israel by Martin_S. The Tzharon Katan (katan=small) is very small, less than 2 centimeters (1 inch) across and can be hard to find, but if you search you will find it among the high rocky desert of the Negev. What is for sure that if your search is successful it will be worth the effort, bend down closer to take a good look. Leave a Comment

Yafnok HaMidbar, Israel by Martin_S. The Yfanok HaMidbar is a parasitic plant that only grows off the root systems of other plants. In a good rainy year when the other plants are healthy and large you will see many of them in the desert. As the rainwater is less, you will see also less of this plant. As it blooms from bottom to top you will see it in full bloom only rarely, usually, as in this picture you will see the lower flowers already dying as the new ones emerge on top. Leave a Comment

Shitah thorns, Israel by Martin_S. The ***ah tree is the bane of all wheeled vehicles, be it tractor, car, jeep, bicycle or truck. You can see the size of the thorns and when one of these gets into your tires, you have a flat for sure, guaranteed.... Even if you have "armoured" tires, I have seen these penetrate mountain bike tires with kevlar lining, rubber linings and "goop" filling... all these things and they still cause a flat. Those needles can be 10 centimeters long and sharp enough .............well you get the idea by now I suspect!! Leave a Comment

Desert View, Har Kaniem, Israel by Martin_S. Our friends Berta and Giora took us out for an afternoon of 4 wheel drive fun. This was the top of a small rise looking toward the Har Kaniem mountain which is a landmark here in the area and very noticeable. You can see the type of landscape we were driving over... Someone dropped all those rocks here. Leave a Comment

Ostrich Farm, southern Israel by Martin_S. There are actually several Ostrich farms in the south of Israel. They are raised for the meat and eggs. If you happen to be near one during the mating season you can see quite a display of plumage as the males attempt to subdue the seemingly disinterested females... There are farms near Beeri, Park Eschol and Eilat that I know of. Leave a Comment

Kotziem, Arad, Israel by Martin_S. This is one of the many plants within the generic term Kotziem, or "stickers". Some of the plants will cause burning or rashes and some leave small needles buried in your flesh. This is one of the sticky types that just irritate, but they do irriate enough if you have on shorts or sandles.. Leave a Comment

Dead Sea sunset, Israel by Martin_S. I keep putting pictures of sunsets, wonder why?? Well I guess if I look at the picture then I can answer my own question can't I. They are one of the most beautiful natural things around. This was taken on the road from the Dead Sea and Arad. There are often spectacular sunsets because of atmospheric dust blown up from the desert. Leave a Comment

Effects of erosion in southern Israel by Martin_S. Erosion is the bane of southern Israel. The soil here is built up from airborne particles, called Loesse. When it rains the soil will very quickly form a "closed" surface and the water will not penetrate into the soil. This is turn causes the water to run off and form raging torrents in the lower spots. When the water begins to run off, it is then strong enough to carry with it all the topsoil, many times leaving only bare rocks in its path. Leave a Comment
